He was born December 5, 1889, in Dubois, Illinois, the son of Ezekie 2 CONC l and Anna (Hoover) Thompson. His father was a veteran of the Civil War. He was married i 2 CONC n 1918 to Ruth Dodds, who survives. They have two sons, Robert K. of The Register-News adver 2 CONC tising staff and William D., a member of the Mt. Mr. Thompson had been in bad heal 2 CONC th sometime, and this condition had been serious for the last two weeks. Death was due t 2 CONC o a complication of ailments and the infirmities of age. Mr. Thompson is survived by a brother John Thompso 2 CONC n and a sister, Mrs. John McClure, 71 both of DuQuoin. His brother visited Mr. Thompson in t 2 CONC his city a year or so ago. Mr. Thompson was a veteran of the Civil War, having a most honora 2 CONC ble record. He enlisted in Company G, 12th Illinois infantry, in 1862 and served throughou 2 CONC t the war. He was wounded three or four times in engagements in which he participated. He w 2 CONC as long a member of Coleman Post G.A.R. 508, and took great interest in the Post and its welf 2 CONC are. Mr. Thompson was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian church and a faithful consecrate 2 CONC d christian. Quiet, and unassuming in manner, a citizen above reproach, he was held in the h 2 CONC ighest esteem and respect by all who knew him, and his influence was always on the side of ri 2 CONC ght. In his quiet and unostenatious way he lived his daily life, doing his duty at all time 2 CONC s and under all circumstances, leving as honorable a record in civil life as he had made whe 2 CONC n he responded to the call of his country in the dark days of 1861, 'the time that tried men' 2 CONC s souls.' He left an example worthy of emulation alike for young and old. Mr. Cowger wa 2 CONC s born in Jefferson County April 26, 1875, and his entire life was spent in the locality in w 2 CONC hich he was born. His age at time of death was 59 years and 12 days. He was united in marri 2 CONC age in 1907 with Miss Nora Thompson, who survives. Mr. Cowger was a son of the late Albert C 2 CONC owger, in his day a highly respected Jefferson county farmer. It reads: "Captain R. Q. Thompson: The subject of the following sketch was born in Law 2 CONC rence County, Pennsylvania on August 31, 1836. His father James G. Thompson was a native o 2 CONC f the same state. He came west in 1859 and settled in DuQuoin, Perry County, Illinois and re 2 CONC mained in the county until his death, which occurred Nov.16, 1879. (this has been proved to b 2 CONC e incorrect). He was a carpenter and cabinetmaker, and followed the trade for the greater por 2 CONC tion of his life. He married Miss Polly Hunter, who was born and raised in Lawrence County 2 CONC , Pennsylvania, and there died in 1857 (suspect this date is incorrect). By that union ther 2 CONC e were four sons and the same number of daughters. Robert Q. is the eldest of the family. H 2 CONC e received a fair English education in the common schools of his native county. When old eno 2 CONC ugh he worked at the trade of carpentering and cabinet-making, and subsequently followed th 2 CONC e business of operating and running stationary engines. He came to the west in 1857, and rem 2 CONC ained a citizen of Perry County until the breaking out of the late war, when with characteris 2 CONC tic patriotism and devotion to his country, in the hour of its peril, enlisted for the term o 2 CONC f three years, the date of which was August 1st, 1861. He became a member of Co. G of the 12 2 CONC th Regt. Ills. Vols. Ezekiel and William were also members of the same company. The forme 2 CONC r veteranized and remained in the service until the close of the war. The 12th Regt. was enl 2 CONC isted for the three month's service, but soon after re-enlisted for three years. On the 31s 2 CONC t Dec., 1863, while the regiment was stationed at Pulaski in Tennessee, Mr. Thompson veterani 2 CONC zed with his company, and remained in the service until the close of the war, and was mustere 2 CONC d out at Louisville, KY, July 4, 1865, and finally discharged at Springfield, Ills., July 11 2 CONC , 1865, having been in the service a few days lacking four years. 2 CONT 2 CONT The 12th Ills. was when first in the service a part of Gen.Prentiss' division. When the arm 2 CONC y was organized into corps it became part of the 16th army corps, under the command of Gen. D 2 CONC odge. In the Atlanta Campaign it was part of the 15th army corps, under command of Gen. Joh 2 CONC n A. Logan, and remained with that corps all through the succeeding campaigns, including Sher 2 CONC man's memorable march to the sea. Capt. Thompson passed from a private to sergeancy in his c 2 CONC ompany, and then to a second lieutenancy. When the regiment veteranizedhe was elected captai 2 CONC n of the company,and from that time had command of the company until mustered out of service 2 CONC . His commission as first lieutenant, dates April 11, 1865, and his commission as captain, J 2 CONC une 12, 1865. He was wounded on the 22d of July 1864, at the siege of Atlanta, the ball pass 2 CONC ing through his left shoulder. He camehome and remained there until convalescent, when he re 2 CONC joined his command which was then at Rome, Georgia, and continued with it until mustered ou 2 CONC t in date above-named. After the close of the war he came to Pinckneyville and engaged in th 2 CONC e cabinet making and furniture business, and still remains in the same trade. On the 1st Jan 2 CONC uary, 1873, he was appointed postmaster of Pinckneyville, and has been continued in that posi 2 CONC tion to the present. ON the 7th Sept., 1865, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Jane, da 2 CONC ughter of Josiah and Isabel (Foster) Swafford, of Franklin County, Ills. By that union ther 2 CONC e were four children, oneof whom is living, a son named James J. Both Mr. and Mrs. Thompso 2 CONC n are members of the M.E. Church. He is a member of I. O. O. F. Politically he comes from a 2 CONC n old whig family, who, after the disbandment of that party joined the Republican organizatio 2 CONC n. Capt. Thompson cast his first presidential vote for A. Cowger on May 29, 1935, in Jefferson County and she survives in Mt. Verno 2 CONC n. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Larry Medders of Mt. Vernon; a daughter 2 CONC , Sharon Flota of Mt. Vernon; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Medders wa 2 CONC s employed for several years as a welder at the Mt. Vernon Car Manufacturing Company and late 2 CONC r at the Mt. Vernon Truck Body Company until retirement. He was a long-time member of Lebano 2 CONC n Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and trustee. He was one of the oldest mem 2 CONC bers of the Lynchburg Road area and was well-known by the young as well as the older member 2 CONC s of the community.
