OBITUARY: In The Preserver: Volume 4, Issue 4 dated 1996 (p. 32) we read the following: "Joseph Ford was born March 27, 1836, and was married to Harriet Scott in the year 1856 to whom 9 children were born: William O., TommieN., Shale H., Frank E., George C., Lune M., Sarah E., Solomon O., Ollie B. In the year 1882 his wife Harriet was called away from this unfriendly world, leaving her husband and 7 children to mourn her absence. In the year 1887 he was united in marriage to Molly Bitner,to whom 2 children were born: Rosa M. and Susie. In the year 1893 Mollie, his wife, was called to her home above. Joseph Ford had been a member of the Christian Church for about 28 years and a man of courage and zeal, also an old soldier of Company F, 31st Illinois Volunteer Infantry. The latter part of his life he was in very feeble health and on Thursday morning, March 6, he was called to try an unknown world to us, at the age of 76 years, 11 months, and 7 days. Note: This obituary was submitted by Wilma Grothoff who is the great-grand-daughter of Joseph Ford. She states that Joseph's second wife was Victoria Robinson, daughter of Emaline Bitner."

Mr. Ford was born in Jefferson county April 3, 1874 and was married to Nellie Piper who preceded him in death in 1918. Surviving are one son, Francis S. Ford of Mt. Vernon, one daughter, Mrs. Florence Beach of El Paso, Texas, three sisters, Mrs. Rosie Bean and Mrs. Luna Mathews of Mt. Vernon and Mrs. Ollie Reynolds of Crown Point, Indiana. BIOGRAPHY: The following sketch was found in the History of Jefferson County, Illinois for Menzis R. Gilbert. It reads: " ... farmer, P. O. Laur, was born February 23, 1831, in Washington County, Ohio, a son of Eli Gilbert. Subject came with his parents to Jefferson County in 1839, and here continued his attendance at school, although his eyes, which had been seriously affected from his birth, prevented him from doing much studying. He was brought up on a farm, and has during his life, given his attention to no other employment. His present farm of 400 acres is under a good state of cultivation, and he engages in mixed farming. He was married, January 19, 1858, to Elizabeth Ford, born January 22, 1841, a daughter of Solomon Ford, of this county. Five children have blessed this union, of whom three survive -- .. .Mr. Gilbert has a good residence, which he built in 1859, and made some substantial additions in 1875. Having a farm especially adapted to the raising of stock, he intends to devote some time to this branch of farming hereafter. He is a Republican in politics, and with his wife, a member of the Universalist Church."
OBITURARY: The Mt. Vernon Register News published a death notice dated Tuesday, March 17, 1908 which reads: "M.R. Gilbert passed away Friday morning at 5:30, after several weeks' sickness."

Mr. Gilbert, retired druggist, was born in Jefferson County February 14, 1880, the youngest child of James Eli and Susa Ford Gilbert. He was graduated from the old Mt. Vernon city high school on Harrison Street and from the University of Illinois and Northwestern. He was a brother of the late G. Gale Gilbert, John P. Gilbert, Mrs. Hattie C. Shaffer and Mrs. Eunice Louth, and a half-brother of the late Arthur Gilbert and Mrs. Gertrude Farris, of Mt. Vernon. He is survived by his wife, Gail, and a half-brother, Glenn Gilbert, of Chicago.
