2 CONC obert K. "Bob" Thompson, 65, 1500 Pace Avenue, died at 3:02 a.m. June 16, 1986, in Good Samar
2 CONC itan Hospital.  Mr. Thompson was born November 5, 1920, in Mt. Vernon, a son of Charles J. an
2 CONC d Ruth D. (Dodds) Thompson.  On October 18, 1941, at St. Charles, Missouri, he married Maria
2 CONC n L. Manley, who survives.  The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home wit
2 CONC h the Very Rev. Robert D. Harmon officiating.  Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.  Frien
2 CONC ds may call at Hughey Funeral Home after 6 p.m. today.  Mr. Thompson was associated with, an
2 CONC d held several positions with The Register News for 39 years, serving last as general manager
2 CONC .  Following that he worked for Century 21 Bee Realtors as a real estate salesman.  In additi
2 CONC on to his wife, Mr. Thompson is survived by one son, Charles R. Thompson of Chicago; two daug
2 CONC hters, Mrs. John S. (Charlotte) Suhler of Darien, Connecticut, and Mrs. Chris G. (Debi) Dixo
2 CONC n of Breese; one brother, William D. Thompson of Warrensburg, Mo.; five grandchildren, Ashley
2 CONC , Courtney and Brooke Suhler and Charlee and Casey Dixon; and several neices and nephews.  Mr
2 CONC . Thompson was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church.  He was also a member of the Mt. Ver
2 CONC non Masonic Lodge No. 31 AF & AM, Ainad Shrine Temple of East St. Louis, Jeffeson County Shri
2 CONC ne Club, Oakwood Cemetery Board, Green Hills Country Club and Mt. Vernon Moose Lodge.  He wa

2 CONC .  "It was 'Thirty' last night for a newspaperman who spent a lifetime in the composing roo
2 CONC m and front office when Charles J. Thompson died suddenly.  Mr.Thompson, business manager o
2 CONC f the Register-News, would have been 70 years old December 5.  Although in failing health fo
2 CONC r 10 years, he worked on the last day of his life at the job he loved -- getting out the dail
2 CONC y newspaper.  Death occurred at 10:30 p.m. at his home, 115 N. 13th Street.  Mr. Thompson beg
2 CONC an his newspaper career as a small boy carrying a paper route for the Mt. Vernon News.  He wa
2 CONC s still a boy when he went into the composing room as a 'printer's devil' and became a journe
2 CONC yman printer as a youth.  He was business manager of The News at the time it was consolidate
2 CONC d with The Register to form The Register News in 1920, and has been with the newspaper ever s
2 CONC ince.  He served in the Army during World War I and had been active in veterans affairs since
2 CONC .  He was a past commander of the local American Legion Post, and served a number of terms o
2 CONC n the post executive committee.  A long-time member of the Elks, he was a past Exalted Rule
2 CONC r of the Mt. Vernon Lodge.  His other civic service included membership on the grade school b
2 CONC oard and as a draft board adviser.  Mr. Thompson was a member of First Community Church and t
2 CONC he local Masonic order.  He was born December 5, 1889, in Dubois, Illinois, the son of Ezekie
2 CONC l and Anna (Hoover) Thompson.  His father was a veteran of the Civil War.  He was married i
2 CONC n 1918 to Ruth Dodds, who survives.  They have two sons, Robert K. of The Register-News adver
2 CONC tising staff and William D., a member of the Mt. Vernon junior college faculty, and five gran
2 CONC dchildren.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Myers Chapel.  The Rev. Andr
2 CONC ew Caraker will officiate and burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.  The body will lie in stat
2 CONC e at the chapel where friends may call after 4 p.m. today."

2 CONC 5 years.  Mrs. Thompson was born in Waltonville, January 3, 1897, the daughter of John Davi

2 CONC mpson, who died November 16, 1959.  Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at th

2 CONC 5 which read: "John David Dodds, coroner of Jefferson county and one of its best known reside
2 CONC nts, died at his home, 216 south Twelfth Street, at 11:30 o'clock last night.  He had been i
2 CONC n impaired health for several years and his condition had been critical since last Saturday
2 CONC , November 30.  His age was 79 years, 1 month and 18 days.  Funeral services will be held a
2 CONC t the Universalist church in Waltonville at two o'clock Friday afternoon with Elder D. E. Bak
2 CONC er officiating.  Interment will be made in Knob Prairie Cemetery.  Born on a farm near Walton
2 CONC ville on October 16, 1836, Mr. Dodds was a son of John and Emeline Keller Dodds, one of the o
2 CONC ld families of Jefferson County.  He engaged in farming for a number of years and later move
2 CONC d to Mt. Vernon engaging in the real estate business.  On February 11, 1880, he was united i
2 CONC n marriage with Olive L. Gilbert at the home of her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Gilb
2 CONC ert of Waltonville.  On the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary, February 11, 1930
2 CONC .  The Register News published an account of Mr. and Mrs. Dodds' wedded life, showing thatth
2 CONC e entire period had been spent in Jefferson County.  During much of the time they made thei
2 CONC r home in Mt. Vernon and at other times resided on their farm.  They lived in Mt. Vernon in 1
2 CONC 887 when the town was swept by the great cyclone and their home was among the many razed in t
2 CONC hat disaster.
2 CONT 
2 CONT An unusual feature of the observance was that Mrs. Dodds' parents and grandparents lived to c
2 CONC elebrate their golden wedding anniversaries. Had Mr. Dodds lived to February 11, 1936, he an
2 CONC d Mrs. Dodds would have been married 56 years.  Mr. and Mrs. Dodds werean unusually devoted c
2 CONC ouple and their long married life was characterized by happiness.  Always actively affiliate
2 CONC d with the Democratic party, Mr. Dodds was elected coroner with a large plurality in the land
2 CONC slide of 1932.  He made an active campaign despite his age and his personal popularity was at
2 CONC tested by his success.  He conducted the affairs of his office in a thorough and efficient ma
2 CONC nner, holding inquests in many deaths.  Troubled by his failing health at times, he occasiona
2 CONC lly delegated a part of the work to assistants, but at all tiimes he fulfilled the major duti
2 CONC es of the position.

2 CONT Mr. Dodds was a man of excellent business judgement, honest and upright in his dealings wit
2 CONC h his fellow me,andin a long and busy life left only friends.  He never entertained feeling
2 CONC s of ill will against anyone and his frank, open manner, his sterling traits of character wo
2 CONC n for him the respect of all, and the affection of those who knew him best. He is survived b
2 CONC y his wife, five daughters, one son, a sister and a brother.  The daughters are Mrs. Myrtle E
2 CONC . Norris of Waltonville, Mrs. Charles J. Thompson of Mt. Vernon, Mrs. Ruby Hirons of St. Loui

2 CONC r two, but had been up and about transacting his ordinary business affairs.

2 CONT Mr. Norris was a victim of influenza last winter and had never regained his former strength
2 CONC , and to this fact is attributed in part his death, complicated with acute Bright's disease
2 CONC .  Mr. Norris was one of the best known, most popular and highly respected citizens of the so
2 CONC uthwest part of Jefferson County, and his death comes as a great shock to not only his immedi
2 CONC ate family and other relatives but to his hundreds of friends in the locality in which he liv
2 CONC ed, and elsewhere.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He was a very successful farmer, an excellent trader, a man of sound judgment, and a citize
2 CONC n above reproach.  All who knew him were his friends and universal expressions of regret an
2 CONC d tributes to his worth as a man, and a member of society are heard on all sides.  Mr. Norri
2 CONC s was born in Jefferson County and was 47 years old March 4 of this year.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mr. Norris always attended the Universalist church and took great interest in its welfare an
2 CONC d in the cause of religion.  About twenty-four years ago Mr. Norris was united in marriage wi
2 CONC th Miss Myrtie Dodds, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Dodds of this city who with the followin
2 CONC g children, survives: Harry, William, Russell, Mary Olive, Louis, and Sadie.  Mr. Norris is s
2 CONC urvived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Norris, and one sister, Mrs. G. W. Ragland, an
2 CONC d one brother, Stanley Norris.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mr. Norris complained of dizziness Sunday and on Monday and seemed to be very weak.  Monday h
2 CONC e ate a hearty breakfast and expressed himself as feeling unusually well, except for dizzines
2 CONC s.  He left home after breakfast and attended to business matters, returning about 9 o'cloc
2 CONC k and again suffering with attacks of dizziness, sat down in a chair in the shade on his lawn
2 CONC .  Shortly after his condition became much worse.  A physician who had been hastily summone
2 CONC d when he was stricken was unable to save him, and he died about 4 o'clock.

2 CONT Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock at the Universalist church in W

2 CONC ge.  Mr. Mannen was born September 6, 1880 at Waltonville, the son of Josiah and May B. (McNa
2 CONC il) Mannen.  On August 11, 1909 he was married to Alma Dodds, who survives. Besides his wife
2 CONC , he is survived by one son, Marvin Mannen of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Anna Ruth Schere
2 CONC r of Mt. Vernon; a brother, Sebern Mannen of Mt. Vernon; six grandchildren and seven great-gr
2 CONC andchildren.  His parents, two brothers and four sisters preceded him in death."

2 CONC on County, Ohio, a son of Eli Gilbert.  Subject came with his parents to Jefferson County i
2 CONC n 1839, and here continued his attendance at school, although his eyes, which had been seriou
2 CONC sly affected from his birth, prevented him from doing much studying.  He was brought up o
2 CONC n a farm, and has during his life, given his attention to no other employment.  His present f
2 CONC arm of 400 acres is under a good state of cultivation, and he engages in mixed farming.  He w
2 CONC as married, January 19, 1858, to Elizabeth Ford, born January 22, 1841, a daughter of Solomo

1 NOTE OBITUARY: In The Preserver: Volume 4, Issue 4 dated 1996 (p. 32) we read the following:  "Jos
2 CONC eph Ford was born March 27, 1836, and was married to Harriet Scott in the year 1856 to who
2 CONC m 9 children were born: William O., TommieN., Shale H., Frank E., George C., Lune M., Sarah E
2 CONC ., Solomon O., Ollie B.  In the year 1882 his wife Harriet was called away from this unfriend
2 CONC ly world, leaving her husband and 7 children to mourn her absence.  In the year 1887 he was u
2 CONC nited in marriage to Molly Bitner,to whom 2 children were born:  Rosa M. and Susie.  In the y
2 CONC ear 1893 Mollie, his wife, was called to her home above.  Joseph Ford had been a member of th
2 CONC e Christian Church for about 28 years and a man of courage and zeal, also an old soldier of C
2 CONC ompany F, 31st Illinois Volunteer Infantry.  The latter part of his life he was in very feebl
2 CONC e health and on Thursday morning, March 6, he was called to try an unknown world to us, at th
2 CONC e age of 76 years, 11 months, and 7 days.   Note:  This obituary was submitted by Wilma Groth
2 CONC off who is the great-grand-daughter of Joseph Ford.  She states that Joseph's second wife wa

2 CONC logical society in Jefferson County, IL we read the following folk history from an intervie
2 CONC w with Solomon Ford and his life as a pioneer: "... There was an incident that happened on th
2 CONC e road I will mention.  Joel Middleton owned an old bull dog that was a favorite, and Georg
2 CONC e Ford, a cousin, owned a fine young bull dog that was a favorite also.  We were somewhere cl
2 CONC ose to the Kentucky and Tennessee line when these two favorite dogs got into a fight.  They h
2 CONC ad been growling and quarreling all the way, so they got into a fight right.  Of course, I re
2 CONC spected the old dog most as he belonged to the man I was moving with and at the commencemen
2 CONC t of the fight I wanted the Ford boys to part them, but no they would not do it.  Their dog w
2 CONC as young and his antagonist was old and they wanted the young dog to whip the old one.  Afte
2 CONC r they had fought a considerable time, the old dog was turning the tide.  Then the Ford boy
2 CONC s were going to part the dogs whether or no, but I gathered my ox whip and turned the butt en
2 CONC d of my whip stock and told them I'd knock the first one down that interfered.  Well, from th
2 CONC at the whole crew got into quite a mess, the women not excepted, so for a while, they, the do
2 CONC gs got into a mud hole.  There the old dog would have drowned the young dog.  I then told Geo
2 CONC rge Ford he could go in and pull the old dog off, so he did not wait to be invited the secon
2 CONC d time, but pushed into the mud and water up to his knees and pulled him off.  That ended th
2 CONC e fight, but it was several days before we all got right, but finally we did.

2 CONT Then after we got near the Ohio River, we had stopped for dinner.  While eating the boys comm
2 CONC enced complaining of being tired, to grunting considerably and all at once, bantered anybod
2 CONC y for a foot race.  Well, the crowd kept silent.  Finally, Joel Middleton's wife said, "Sol,a
2 CONC re you going to take that?"  I said, "No, I'm not."  So we all left our dinner, went up the r
2 CONC oad, stepped off 50 yards and we started off.  The first thirty yards we ran,I had no advanta
2 CONC ge of the old man, but at the end of fifty yards I came out about 1 1/2 feet the advantage. W
2 CONC e then went back, finished our dinner and then we pulled on across the river."

2 CONT OBITUARY:  The Mt. Vernon Register published the following on February 1, 1893 which read a
2 CONC s follows: "Solomon Ford, one of McClellan townships oldest and most respected residents, die
2 CONC d yesterday, it being his 81st birthday (this doesn't match the newspaper date).  He was take
2 CONC n ill about ten days ago.  The funeral will occur 10 o'clock tomorrow morning at Wolf Prairie
2 CONC , and will be in charge of Mt. Vernon Lodge No. 31 A.F. and A.M. of which he was an honored m
2 CONC ember.

2 CONT Solomon Ford was born in Anson Co., North Carolina, January 26, 1812, and at the age of thre
2 CONC e years with his parents moved to near Woodbury, Tenn. at the head of Stoneriver.  When ninet
2 CONC een years of age he left his parents and emigrated to Marion county, Ill., and while campin
2 CONC g and resting in that county he met one Sarah Morrison with whom he fell in love, which ripen
2 CONC ed into marriage July 21, 1831, Rev. David R. Chance performing the ceremony. The next mornin
2 CONC g after his marriage his father-in-law, Joseph Morrison, who had cut and harvested all but fo
2 CONC ur or five acres of his wheat offered to give him the remainder if he would harvest it.  He a
2 CONC nd his wife did so, and secured bread enough to last the next twelve months.  They harveste
2 CONC d all of it with a reap hook.  After making two crops on rented ground in Marion county, he a
2 CONC nd his wife moved to Mississippi, where they cleared about four acres in the wilderness, buil
2 CONC t a cabin and planted some corn.  Here he killed a snake which measured ten feet in length an
2 CONC d five inches in diameter.  In a short time, however, he moved back to Illinois.  On the wa
2 CONC y back and while camped in Kentucky one night, a cyclone struck them and carried the wagon an

2 CONC n Dodds, better known as the Willis Keller farm.  After five years in this county he contract
2 CONC ed the Texas fever, and started for that state.  On they way, and while in Arkansas he was ta

2 CONT Having decided to make the legal profession his life work, Mr. Gilbert, shortly after finishi

2 CONC e has forged rapidly to the front as a capable lawyer and judicious practitioner, being at th
2 CONC is time recognized as one of the leading members of his profession in the field to which hi
2 CONC s talents are principally confined.  His career presents a series of continued successes suc
2 CONC h as few men of his age and experience attain and during the last ten years, few important ca
2 CONC ses have been tried in the courts of Jefferson County in which he has not appeared as counsel
2 CONC , besides being interested in a large and growing legal business in neighboring counties.

2 CONT Mr. Gilbert has never ceased being a student, and his aim has been to become a good lawyer an
2 CONC d stand as near as possible in the very front ranks of his profession.  To this end he keep
2 CONC s in close touch with the trend of current legal thought and familiar with the leading author
2 CONC ities, this with his knowledge of the basic principles of jurisprudence and the ability to ap
2 CONC ply the same to practice, enabling him to cope with the ablest of opposing counsel and in th
2 CONC e majority of cases to gain verdicts for his clients.  He is careful and methodical in the pr
2 CONC eparation of legal papers and their presentation to the court are very thorough in the matter
2 CONC s of detail as well as in the general principles of his cases, while his ability as an advoca
2 CONC te makes him a formidable, though at all times a fair and courteous adversary.

2 CONT Mr. Gilbert served from 1905 to 1907 as City Attorney of Mount Vernon and in 1896 was the Rep
2 CONC ublican nominee for Prosecuting Attorney for Jefferson County, but failed of election on acco
2 CONC unt of the then normally strong Democratic majority.  He is an active and influential politic
2 CONC ian, a trusted leader of the Republican party in his own and other Southern Illinois counties
2 CONC , besides enjoying a wide acquaintance in political circles throughout the state.  In additio
2 CONC n to his general practice, he is attorney for various enterprises, among which are the Moun
2 CONC t Vernon Car Manufacturing Company, the Third National Bank, of which is also a director, th
2 CONC e Citizens Gas, Electric & Heating Company, and the Mount Vernon Loan & Building Association
2 CONC .  He is also a director of I.G. Gee & Co. Bank at Waltonville, and sustains a similar relati
2 CONC on to the banks of Woodlawn and Kell, his connection with these several interests indicatin
2 CONC g the confidence which the management repose in his ability and judgment, besides being a com
2 CONC pliment to his high standing as a faithful and honorale business man.  In addition to his suc
2 CONC cesses in his profession and in politics Mr. Gilbert is a capable and prosperous business man
2 CONC .

2 CONT In the year 1906 Mr. Gilbert was appointed postmaster of Mount Vernon and has since conducte
2 CONC d the office with his characteristic business ability, discharing the duties with credit to h
2 CONC imself and tothe entire satisfaction of the public.  Since taking charge of the office, heha
2 CONC s made many changes and introduced a number of reforms and it is now conceded by all with an
2 CONC y knowledge of postal affairs as well as by the department, to be one of the most methodica
2 CONC l and best managed offices in the state.

2 CONT Mr. Gilbert was married in April 1893, to Miss Catherine Harman, of Jefferson County, daughte
2 CONC r of the late John Q. Harman, a former prominent citizen of the county and the first Clerk o
2 CONC f the Appellate Court at Mount Vernon, of which position he was the incumbent at the time o
2 CONC f his death.  Three children have been born to this union, namely:  James Harman, Helen May a
2 CONC nd George Gale, Jr.  In his fraternal relations Mr. Gilbert is a member of the Pythian Brothe
2 CONC rhood, belonging to Jefferson Lodge, No. 121, and he is also an influential worker in Lodge N

2 CONT OBITURARY #1:" Mrs. Maud Ford of Kansas City, Mo., a former Mt. Vernon resident, died yesterd
2 CONC ay afternoon in General Hospital in that city.  She was 74 years old.  She was the mother o
2 CONC f two children, Max Ford, of Kansas City, with whom she made her home and Mrs. Joe Farney o
2 CONC f Alton, Illinois.  She also had three grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held at the A
2 CONC ssembly of God Church in Kansas City at 2:00 p.m. tomorow and the body will be brought to Mt
2 CONC . Vernon for burial in Oakwood Cemetery.  She was the sister of Mrs. Beulah Piper and Arthu
2 CONC r McLaughlin, both of this city.  Her husband, Erie Ford, preceded her in death."
