There was an incident that happened on th 2 CONC e road I will mention. Joel Middleton owned an old bull dog that was a favorite, and Georg 2 CONC e Ford, a cousin, owned a fine young bull dog that was a favorite also. We were somewhere cl 2 CONC ose to the Kentucky and Tennessee line when these two favorite dogs got into a fight. They h 2 CONC ad been growling and quarreling all the way, so they got into a fight right. Of course, I re 2 CONC spected the old dog most as he belonged to the man I was moving with and at the commencemen 2 CONC t of the fight I wanted the Ford boys to part them, but no they would not do it. Their dog w 2 CONC as young and his antagonist was old and they wanted the young dog to whip the old one. Afte 2 CONC r they had fought a considerable time, the old dog was turning the tide. Then the Ford boy 2 CONC s were going to part the dogs whether or no, but I gathered my ox whip and turned the butt en 2 CONC d of my whip stock and told them I'd knock the first one down that interfered. Well, from th 2 CONC at the whole crew got into quite a mess, the women not excepted, so for a while, they, the do 2 CONC gs got into a mud hole. There the old dog would have drowned the young dog. I then told Geo 2 CONC rge Ford he could go in and pull the old dog off, so he did not wait to be invited the secon 2 CONC d time, but pushed into the mud and water up to his knees and pulled him off. That ended th 2 CONC e fight, but it was several days before we all got right, but finally we did. 2 CONT 2 CONT Then after we got near the Ohio River, we had stopped for dinner. While eating the boys comm 2 CONC enced complaining of being tired, to grunting considerably and all at once, bantered anybod 2 CONC y for a foot race. Well, the crowd kept silent. Finally, Joel Middleton's wife said, "Sol,a 2 CONC re you going to take that?" I said, "No, I'm not." So we all left our dinner, went up the r 2 CONC oad, stepped off 50 yards and we started off. The first thirty yards we ran,I had no advanta 2 CONC ge of the old man, but at the end of fifty yards I came out about 1 1/2 feet the advantage. W 2 CONC e then went back, finished our dinner and then we pulled on across the river." 2 CONT 2 CONT OBITUARY: The Mt. Vernon Register published the following on February 1, 1893 which read a 2 CONC s follows: "Solomon Ford, one of McClellan townships oldest and most respected residents, die 2 CONC d yesterday, it being his 81st birthday (this doesn't match the newspaper date). He was take 2 CONC n ill about ten days ago. The funeral will occur 10 o'clock tomorrow morning at Wolf Prairie 2 CONC , and will be in charge of Mt. Vernon Lodge No. 31 A.F. and A.M. of which he was an honored m 2 CONC ember. 2 CONT 2 CONT Solomon Ford was born in Anson Co., North Carolina, January 26, 1812, and at the age of thre 2 CONC e years with his parents moved to near Woodbury, Tenn. at the head of Stoneriver. When ninet 2 CONC een years of age he left his parents and emigrated to Marion county, Ill., and while campin 2 CONC g and resting in that county he met one Sarah Morrison with whom he fell in love, which ripen 2 CONC ed into marriage July 21, 1831, Rev. David R. Chance performing the ceremony. The next mornin 2 CONC g after his marriage his father-in-law, Joseph Morrison, who had cut and harvested all but fo 2 CONC ur or five acres of his wheat offered to give him the remainder if he would harvest it. He a 2 CONC nd his wife did so, and secured bread enough to last the next twelve months. They harveste 2 CONC d all of it with a reap hook. After making two crops on rented ground in Marion county, he a 2 CONC nd his wife moved to Mississippi, where they cleared about four acres in the wilderness, buil 2 CONC t a cabin and planted some corn. Here he killed a snake which measured ten feet in length an 2 CONC d five inches in diameter. In a short time, however, he moved back to Illinois. On the wa 2 CONC y back and while camped in Kentucky one night, a cyclone struck them and carried the wagon an 2 CONC d themselves a distance of fifty yards without injury, but the oxen with which they travele 2 CONC d wee out of the path of the cyclone. 2 CONT 2 CONT But they had a rough experience getting out of there. They only made a difference of a quart 2 CONC er of a mile the first day as timber was scattered all along the pathway. They arrived in Il 2 CONC linois in September having been nearly two months on the way, to find that Mrs. Ford's fthe 2 CONC r had died about the time they left Mississippi to be found in the southwest, and moved to Ma 2 CONC rion county, Arkansas. Shortly after arriving in that country he killd his first panther, an 2 CONC d contracted for a supply of meal in exchange for pelts. He made while there 1200 rails fo 2 CONC r 50 pounds of salt and 200 for one pound of coffee. After one years residence in Marion cou 2 CONC nty he moved to Benton county, same state, and there saw an Indian hung who bad killed his wi 2 CONC fe by sticking a knife in the top of her head. 2 CONT 2 CONT After three years residence in Arkansas he moved to Lawrence county, Missouri, where he remai 2 CONC ned two years and then returned to Marion county, Illinois, in 1845, and rented a farm of Wil 2 CONC liam Baldridge. In the fall of 1849, he came to Jefferson county, moving to the farm of Joh 2 CONC n Dodds, better known as the Willis Keller farm. After five years in this county he contract 2 CONC ed the Texas fever, and started for that state. On they way, and while in Arkansas he was ta 2 CONC ken down with spinal troubles, and for about three months was not out of the house and was un 2 CONC able to walk without two sticks for more than a year. In 1855 he again returned to this coun 2 CONC ty, and after renting various places for eleven years bought the farm upon which he has sinc 2 CONC e lived and died. His wife still survives him and was his senior by about one year. The abo 2 CONC ve facts are gleaned from notes prepared under Mr. Ford's own direction and can be relied upo 2 CONC n as accurate." 2 CONT 2 CONT PROBATE: The Last Will and Testament of Solomon Ford was written on 12 September 1885. Wollaston ( 2 CONC Braintree), Windsor, and Wethersfield. It was published in New Haven, Connecticut in 1953 wi 2 CONC th a forward being written by Donald Lines Jacobus, prominent genealogical researcher for Ne 2 CONC w England families. 2 CONT 2 CONT "In the month of March or April 1649, Thomas Gilbert associated himself with Henry Stiles, an 2 CONC d this, although with entire innocence on Gilbert's part, led to great misfortune to himsel 2 CONC f and his family. Stiles was a man of mature age, being past fifty, without wife or family a 2 CONC nd boarded in Gilbert's house. Mrs. Gilbert performed many services for him in making and re 2 CONC pairing his clothing, tending him in sickness and the like. There is not the slightest trac 2 CONC e of any discord or ill feeling of either party to this arrangement. On Nov. 3, 1651, Henr 2 CONC y Stiles was accidentally shot in the back and died in consequence of the wound. ... the de 2 CONC ath of Henry Stiles did occur at the time and in the manner related, as the records of the Pa 2 CONC rticular Court, held Dec. 4, 1651, attest ... [the following is the indictment made against o 2 CONC ne Thomas Allyn] ... Thomas Allyn, thou art indited by the name of Thomas Allyn that not hav 2 CONC ing that due fear of God before thine eyes for the preservation of the life of thy neighbor 2 CONC , didst suddenly, negligently, carelessly cock thy piece, and carry the piece just behind th 2 CONC y neighbor, which piece being charged and going off in thine hand, slew thy neighbor to the g 2 CONC reat dishonor of God, breach of the peace, and loss of a member of this commonwealth. What s 2 CONC ayest thou, art thou guilty or not guilty?" 2 CONT 2 CONT After giving his answer the judge said: "The inditement being confessed, you (the jury) are t 2 CONC o Inquire whether you finde the act to bee manslaughter or homicide-by misadventure." The ju 2 CONC ry came back with the following answer: "The said Thomas Allyn, being Indited for the fact, t 2 CONC he Jury finds the same to be Homicide by misadventure." Thomas Allyn was fined 20 pounds fo 2 CONC r his "sinful neglect and careless carriages" and his father also brought to the Commonwealt 2 CONC h an additional 10 pounds and he essentially was given probation for one year. 2 CONT 2 CONT Now, Thomas Gilbert brought in a bill against the estate of Henry Stiles. He ended up movin 2 CONC g his family to Windsor, CT after Mr. Stiles death. Along this time there was much distres 2 CONC s with witchcraft in the area and the following becomes even more personal to this family o 2 CONC f Gilbert's. The account is as follows: 2 CONT 2 CONT "Who Lydia Gilbert's accusers were is unknown. Whether ignorant gossip or private enmities b 2 CONC rought this ghastly charge upon her, it is impossible to say. That the charge of procuring t 2 CONC he death of Henry Stiles could be brought against her seems incredible, when everyone of matu 2 CONC re age in Windsor must have known that Henry Stiles met his death by the carelessness of Thom 2 CONC as Allyn, three years before. But this charge was brought against her. She was charged wit 2 CONC h other witchcrafts besides this, and it may be that she was one of those unfortunate women t 2 CONC o whom suspicion of witchcraft clung, for reasons which cannot now be stated. The evidence u 2 CONC pon which Lydia was convicted, and the names of the jury and the names of the magistrates wh 2 CONC o heard the case are on record, as well as the indictment and the verdict. ... The Indictme 2 CONC nt: Lydea Gilburt thou art here indited by that name of Lydea Gilburt that not having the fe 2 CONC are of god before thy Eyes thou hast of late years or still dust give Entertainment to Satha 2 CONC n the greate Enemy of god and mankind and by his helpe hast killed the Body of Henry Styles b 2 CONC esides other witchcrafts for which according to the law of god and the Established Law of thi 2 CONC s commonwealth thou Deservest to Dye. ... The Verdict: Ye part above mentioned is found gui 2 CONC lty of witchcraft by the Jury." 2 CONT 2 CONT "All the authorities upon the witchcraft cases state that she suffered death. An accusatio 2 CONC n or even the suspicion of witchcraft was so deadly a thing that persons involved fled from t 2 CONC he Colony in dread haste if possible. ... There is no evidence that there was any intervent 2 CONC ion in behalf of Mrs. Gilbert. The governor of the Colony did not have the power of repriev 2 CONC e or pardon at this time. An appeal to the General Court was possible, but there is no recor 2 CONC d of such an appeal in this or in any of the witchcraft cases. ... She may have suffered th 2 CONC e penalty either in the jail yard at Hartford or more probably on the lot at the corner of Al 2 CONC bany Avenue and Vine Street in Hartford, where the public gallows is know to have stood..." 2 CONT 2 CONT One final note regarding Lydia would be that some researchers believe she was the daughter o 2 CONC f Thomas Gilbert and not his wife. In the text of the history from which these quotes come i 2 CONC s the explanation of these theories, and most agree it would have had to be his wife, not a d 2 CONC aughter. 1 SOUR @S143@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 11 JUL 2001 3 TIME 21:37:12 0 @I3271@ INDI 1 NAME Thomas /Gilbert/ 2 GIVN Thomas 2 SURN Gilbert 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1556 2 PLAC Beverley,Yorkshire,England 1 AFN W5WZ-MB 1 FAMS @F1067@ 1 SOUR @S143@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 20 JUN 2001 3 TIME 21:48:31 0 @I3272@ INDI 1 NAME Aleny /Brooke/ 2 GIVN Aleny 2 SURN Brooke 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1560 2 PLAC Beverley,Yorkshire,England 1 AFN W5WZ-NH 1 FAMS @F1067@ 1 SOUR @S143@ 1 CHAN 2 DATE 19 DEC 2000 3 TIME 23:33:35 0 @I3302@ INDI 1 NAME Robert /Spurr/ 2 GIVN Robert 2 SURN Spurr 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1610 2 PLAC England 1 DEAT 2 DATE 16 AUG 1703 2 PLAC Dorchester,Massachusetts 1 FAMS @F1091@ 1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY: In Hotten's book Original Lists of Persons from Great Britain to the American Plan 2 CONC tation (p. 51) we learn that Robert Spurr, age 24 embarked 3 April 1635 on the "Paul" of Lond 2 CONC on.
