He was born December 5, 1889, in Dubois, Illinois, the son of Ezekie 2 CONC l and Anna (Hoover) Thompson. His father was a veteran of the Civil War. Vernon, near Fresno 2 CONC , California, where he had resided the last year or more. 2 CONT Mr. Davis had been in greatly impaired health sometime, and his death was not unexpected. H 2 CONC e and Mrs. Davis left Mt. Vernon about two yeas ago for California where they were making the 2 CONC ir home when he died. They had no children. Mr. Davis was for many years one of the leadin 2 CONC g general merchants of Jefferson County, conducting a large store at Waltonville. He was a s 2 CONC uccessful business man. Some years ago he located in Mt. Vernon where he engaged in the insu 2 CONC rance business until leaving for California. Mr. and Mrs. Davis had many friends in Mt. Venr 2 CONC on and in the sourthwest part of the county. He was born in Monroe County, but lived in Jeff 2 CONC erson County many years and married Miss Ruth Hirons of Waltonville, a daughter of Sidney T 2 CONC . Hirons. Mrs. Hirons survives. Mr. Davis was 70 or more years old, it is stated. The bod 2 CONC y will be brought back for burial, and it is understood Mrs. Davis will leave California Tues 2 CONC day next with the body." 2 CONT 2 CONT In the Mt. Vernon Register News a second obituary was published on Thursday, September 28, 19 2 CONC 33 which informed the community that "the body of H. H. Davis, a former resident, who died i 2 CONC n California, a short time ago, will arrive at 11:30 tomorrow morning and funeral services wi 2 CONC ll be held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 in the Methodist church in Waltonville. Burial will foll 2 CONC ow in Knob Prairie cemetery." 2 CONT 2 CONT On Thursday, October 12, 1933 a third, more detailed obituary appeared in the Mt. Vernon Regi 2 CONC ster which read as follows: "Hiram Henry Davis son of the late Hiram S. and Rowena (Fairchild 2 CONC ) Davis, was born near Red Bud, Illinois March 16, 1861, and passed away at South Gate, Calif 2 CONC ornia, September 22, 1933, at the age of 72 years, six months and 16 days. Mr. Davis locate 2 CONC d in Waltonville in 1892 soon after the completion of the W. C. and W. Railroad, having purch 2 CONC ased the first ticket issued from Percy to Waltonville. On the 16th day of November 1897, h 2 CONC e was united in marriage with Miss Ruth Hirons, daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Sidney T. Hirons. M 2 CONC r. and Mrs. Davis' devotion to each other has often been the subject of much favorable commen 2 CONC t among their many friends and his death ends more than thirty-five years of perfect companio 2 CONC nship. In one of the last letters which Mr. Davis wrote to this friends here he paid a beaut 2 CONC iful tribute to his faithful wife who ministered to him so lovingly during his last long illn 2 CONC ess. Mr. Davis engaged in the mercantile business here over a period of twenty-five years 2 CONC . He was one of the most successful nd most highly esteemed business men of Southern Illinoi 2 CONC s and his friends and associates vie with one another in paying merited tribute to his many s 2 CONC terling traits of character. He won the confidence and esteem of all those with whom he deal 2 CONC t by his honest and straightforward manner of conducting his business affairs. Of a genial 2 CONC , friendly disposition, he was ever too tired or too busy to extend a pleaant greeting or d 2 CONC o a good turn. He possessed a keen, analytical and deliberate mind, arriving at his conclusi 2 CONC ons after careful considerations. These splendid qualities of hand caused his friends and bu 2 CONC siness associates to seek his counsel and rely upon his judgement. Mr. Davis' life was an op 2 CONC en book; his habits were indeed exemplary. He greatly enjoyed attending church services. Th 2 CONC e noble life he led indicates how completely the best and highest ethical and religious princ 2 CONC iples motivated his thoughts and actions. Three weeks ago today Mr. Davis, realizing that hi 2 CONC s condition was grave, expressed his entire readiness and willingness to go. He reiterated m 2 CONC any times his deep love for his dear wife and spoke feelingly of his affection for his relati 2 CONC ves in the West and the loved ones back in Illinois. The surviving relatives include his dev 2 CONC oted wife, four sisters; Mrs. Mary Miller, Murphysboro, Illinois; Mrs. Rena Henderson, San Fe 2 CONC rnando, California; Mrs. Flora Nicholson, and Mrs. Eunice Duker. Red Bud, Illinois, andone b 2 CONC rother, Warren L. Davis, Wichita, Kansas. His parents, two brothers and two sisters precede 2 CONC d him in death. It is difficult for us to realize that our good friend, Henry Davis, has joi 2 CONC ned the immortals in 'The Land of the Unsetting Sun.' As we remarked this morning there is n 2 CONC o limit to the good things we might say about Mr. Davis, but fter all the splendid life he li 2 CONC ved, is his greatest eulogy. Of him it may be truly said: 'There was a man.' The funeral wa 2 CONC s held Sunday afternoon at the M.E. Church in Waltonville, conducted by Elder Arold, a Primit 2 CONC ive Baptist minister of Carmi, Illinois. Six nephews acted as pall bearers. The foral offer 2 CONC ings were many and very beautiful. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in Waltonvil 2 CONC le. The attendance at the church and cemetery was an eloquent tribute to the affection and r 2 CONC espect for which Mr. Davis was held by his many friends. During much of the time they made thei 2 CONC r home in Mt. Vernon and at other times resided on their farm. They lived in Mt. Vernon in 1 2 CONC 887 when the town was swept by the great cyclone and their home was among the many razed in t 2 CONC hat disaster. 2 CONT 2 CONT An unusual feature of the observance was that Mrs. Dodds' parents and grandparents lived to c 2 CONC elebrate their golden wedding anniversaries. He made an active campaign despite his age and his personal popularity was at 2 CONC tested by his success. He conducted the affairs of his office in a thorough and efficient ma 2 CONC nner, holding inquests in many deaths. Fly & Sons, 107 North Tenth Stree 2 CONC t and prepared for burial, where it may be viewed by friends at any convenient time up to th 2 CONC e funeral hour tomorrow. Of an intensely patriotic nature, Mr. Dodds served as a sergeant i 2 CONC n Company K, Illinois volunteer infantry in the Spanish American War in 1898. He proved a go 2 CONC od soldier, living up to his rule of giving wholehearted service in all the undertakings of l 2 CONC ife. He was a member of Eben Swift Post, No 94, United Spanish War veterans, and in the day 2 CONC s of his health and strength took much interest in the organization, and the patriotic princi 2 CONC ples for which it stands. Born on a farm, Mr. Dodds spent his early life in farm pursuits, b 2 CONC ut located in Mt. Vernon 49 years ago. He and his brother, John David Dodds, operated an ext 2 CONC ensive livery business at Eleventh and Broadway, a number of years, the business at that tim 2 CONC e being one of much importance. Later he served as a city policeman at different times bein 2 CONC g most favorably known as a conscientious and efficient officer. Mr. Dodds, aside from his m 2 CONC any excellent personal qualities and virtues, will be best remembered as a magistrate. For 2 2 CONC 5 or 30 years he served in one or the other of two offices of the same nature, police magistr 2 CONC ate of the city of Mt. Vernon and justice of the peace of Mt. Vernon township. Mr. Dodds, i 2 CONC n his long service as a magistrate was recognized as a capable judge of the law, a fair and c 2 CONC onscientious administrator of the law as far asit was involved in the office of magistrate 2 CONC . His courteous treatment, his consideration for unfortunates, brought before him on crimina 2 CONC l charges, and fair dealing with all concerned in civil and all other cases, combined to mak 2 CONC e him a most popular man and official. His popularity through a long period of public servic 2 CONC e is attested by the fact that even in Republican landslide years, he as a Democrat, receive 2 CONC d the largest vote of any candidate of either party, being the only Democrat elected. Althou 2 CONC gh a consistent Democrat he won the support of people of all parties by reason of his fair an 2 CONC d honest disposition of the matters coming before him in his official capacity. Personally 2 CONC , popular, of a kindly, friendly nature, he made and retained friends throughout his long lif 2 CONC e, the friends of his youth being his friends until the end. To his personal friends Mr. Dodd 2 CONC s was universally known as Neal, while to many others, he was always "Uncle Neal." Neal, and Wm. S. with a sister, Mrs. Margaret A. Mannen, preceding her. She was ma 2 CONC rried in Sidney T. Hirons son of Benjamin and Emily Place Hirons on November 18, 1875. No one ever came into her home that did not fee 2 CONC l the warmth and genuine hospitality of a friendly and sympathetic heart. In the long afflic 2 CONC tion of her husband she never murmured or grew weary. In her own long illness she was alway 2 CONC s cheerful and hoping that she would soon grow better. Mr. Norri 2 CONC s was born in Jefferson County and was 47 years old March 4 of this year. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mr. Norris always attended the Universalist church and took great interest in its welfare an 2 CONC d in the cause of religion. About twenty-four years ago Mr. Norris was united in marriage wi 2 CONC th Miss Myrtie Dodds, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Dodds of this city who with the followin 2 CONC g children, survives: Harry, William, Russell, Mary Olive, Louis, and Sadie. Mr. Norris is s 2 CONC urvived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Norris, and one sister, Mrs. G. W. Ragland, an 2 CONC d one brother, Stanley Norris. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mr. Norris complained of dizziness Sunday and on Monday and seemed to be very weak. Monday h 2 CONC e ate a hearty breakfast and expressed himself as feeling unusually well, except for dizzines 2 CONC s. He left home after breakfast and attended to business matters, returning about 9 o'cloc 2 CONC k and again suffering with attacks of dizziness, sat down in a chair in the shade on his lawn 2 CONC . Shortly after his condition became much worse. Keller began farming for himself under circumstances which to most men would have b 2 CONC een would have been considered decidedly discouraging, but to one of his energy and optimism 2 CONC , the future appeared bright with promise, notwithstanding the sum total of his earthly capit 2 CONC al at that time amounted to less than ten dollars. Keller, to a brief review of whose career the reader's attention is herewith re 2 CONC spectfully invited , was born in Mount Vernon on the 18th day of April, 1872, and spent his e 2 CONC arly life in the city and on his father's farm, his experience in the country having a decide 2 CONC d influence in fostering habits of industry and teaching lessons of self-reliance which subse 2 CONC quently resulted so greatly to his advantage. At the proper age he entered the public school 2 CONC s of his native place, between which and the country districts he devoted the time until comp 2 CONC leting the prescribed course when he became a student in the Southern Illinois Normal Schoo 2 CONC l at Carbondale, where he prosecuted his studies for a period of two years, during which tim 2 CONC e he made commendable progress and earned a creditable record. From hi 2 CONC s youth he had manifested a lively interest in public affairs and on attaining his majority b 2 CONC ecame influential in political circles and one of the rising young Democrats of Jefferson cou 2 CONC nty, and when it became necessary to select a candidate for the important and responsible off 2 CONC ice of Circuit Clerk, attention was directed to him as the most available man to select, an 2 CONC d it was not long until his party friends rallied to his support and his nomination, his elec 2 CONC tion following as a matter of course, not altogether, however, on account of the normally lar 2 CONC ge Democratic majority but by reason of his great personal popularity and eminent fitness fo 2 CONC r the position as well. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mr. Keller's official career proving creditable to himself and acceptable to the public he wa 2 CONC s renominated at the expiration of his term and in the election of 1900 was again victorious 2 CONC , defeating his competitor by a decisive majority and during his second incumbency proving a 2 CONC n able and faithful public servant whose record fully met the expectations of the people. O 2 CONC n retiring from the clerkship Mr. Keller devoted two years to the grocery business but at th 2 CONC e expiration of that time severed his connection with merchandising and in 1906 entered the H 2 CONC am National Bank as assistant cashier, which position he still worhily holds. Keller, lawyer, Mt. Vernon, is a native of this county, ha 2 CONC ving been born about three miles southwest of Mt. Vernon, November 24, 1851. He was raised o 2 CONC n he home farm, and during his youth gave his attention to farming pursuits. In the common s 2 CONC chools of the vicinity he obtained his early schooling, which he supplementedby a three years 2 CONC ' course of study, under the preceptorship of Prof. T. H. Herdman, then of Mt. Vernon, no 2 CONC w a Methodist clergyman residing near Vandalia, Ill. Becoming dissatisfied with life on th 2 CONC e farm, he evinced an early desire to cast his lot with some of the higher profession.
