2 CONC obert K. "Bob" Thompson, 65, 1500 Pace Avenue, died at 3:02 a.m. June 16, 1986, in Good Samar
2 CONC itan Hospital.  Mr. Thompson was born November 5, 1920, in Mt. Vernon, a son of Charles J. an
2 CONC d Ruth D. (Dodds) Thompson.  On October 18, 1941, at St. Charles, Missouri, he married Maria
2 CONC n L. Manley, who survives.  The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home wit
2 CONC h the Very Rev. Robert D. Harmon officiating.  Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.  Frien
2 CONC ds may call at Hughey Funeral Home after 6 p.m. today.  Mr. Thompson was associated with, an
2 CONC d held several positions with The Register News for 39 years, serving last as general manager
2 CONC .  Following that he worked for Century 21 Bee Realtors as a real estate salesman.  In additi
2 CONC on to his wife, Mr. Thompson is survived by one son, Charles R. Thompson of Chicago; two daug
2 CONC hters, Mrs. John S. (Charlotte) Suhler of Darien, Connecticut, and Mrs. Chris G. (Debi) Dixo
2 CONC n of Breese; one brother, William D. Thompson of Warrensburg, Mo.; five grandchildren, Ashley

2 CONC . Thompson was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church.  He was also a member of the Mt. Ver

1 NOTE OBITUARY: The Mt. Vernon Register News published the following on Tuesday, November 17, 1959
2 CONC .  "It was 'Thirty' last night for a newspaperman who spent a lifetime in the composing roo
2 CONC m and front office when Charles J. Thompson died suddenly.  Mr.Thompson, business manager o
2 CONC f the Register-News, would have been 70 years old December 5.  Although in failing health fo
2 CONC r 10 years, he worked on the last day of his life at the job he loved -- getting out the dail
2 CONC y newspaper.  Death occurred at 10:30 p.m. at his home, 115 N. 13th Street.  Mr. Thompson beg
2 CONC an his newspaper career as a small boy carrying a paper route for the Mt. Vernon News.  He wa
2 CONC s still a boy when he went into the composing room as a 'printer's devil' and became a journe
2 CONC yman printer as a youth.  He was business manager of The News at the time it was consolidate
2 CONC d with The Register to form The Register News in 1920, and has been with the newspaper ever s
2 CONC ince.  He served in the Army during World War I and had been active in veterans affairs since
2 CONC .  He was a past commander of the local American Legion Post, and served a number of terms o
2 CONC n the post executive committee.  A long-time member of the Elks, he was a past Exalted Rule
2 CONC r of the Mt. Vernon Lodge.  His other civic service included membership on the grade school b
2 CONC oard and as a draft board adviser.  Mr. Thompson was a member of First Community Church and t
2 CONC he local Masonic order.  He was born December 5, 1889, in Dubois, Illinois, the son of Ezekie
2 CONC l and Anna (Hoover) Thompson.  His father was a veteran of the Civil War.  He was married i
2 CONC n 1918 to Ruth Dodds, who survives.  They have two sons, Robert K. of The Register-News adver
2 CONC tising staff and William D., a member of the Mt. Vernon junior college faculty, and five gran
2 CONC dchildren.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Myers Chapel.  The Rev. Andr
2 CONC ew Caraker will officiate and burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.  The body will lie in stat
2 CONC e at the chapel where friends may call after 4 p.m. today."

2 CONC 5 which read: Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday for Leo Martin, a Waltonville bu
2 CONC sinessman and one of Jefferson County's best known and liked citizens.  Mr. Martin, 49, die
2 CONC d at 12:10 p.m. Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital following an apparent heart attack.  Hi
2 CONC s sudden and unexpected death came as a shock to the Waltonville community, and his many frie
2 CONC nds throughout Jefferson county.  For the past 25 years Mr. Martin, who was known as "Bud" b
2 CONC y his friends, had operated a garage and service station at Waltonville.  He became suddenl
2 CONC y ill Sunday morning and was taken to the hospital, where he died shortly after noon.  Mr. Ma
2 CONC rtin was active in community affairs at Waltonville over the years, having served on both th
2 CONC e school board and the village board.
2 CONT He was also active in politics, serving as Republican precinct committeeman, a position he he
2 CONC ld at the time of his death.  He was a member of the Waltonville Methodist Church, Masonic Lo
2 CONC dge 918 of Sesser, Alnad Temple of East St. Louis, Knights Templar, the Jefferson County Shri
2 CONC ne club, and the Modern Woodman of America.
2 CONT He was born January 7, 1916 in Jefferson County, the son of Krekel and Nellie (Shelton) Marti
2 CONC n.  He was a lifetime citizen of this county.  He was married to Marjorie Mannen, who survive
2 CONC s.  He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Nellie Martin of Waltonville; and a sister, Mrs
2 CONC . Max Shurtz of Waltonville.  Funeral services were held Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Fry Funer

2 CONC r 23, 1933 which reads: "News was received in Waltonville this morning of the death of Hira
2 CONC m Henry Davis, for many years a resident of Waltonville, and later of Mt. Vernon, near Fresno
2 CONC , California, where he had resided the last year or more.
2 CONT Mr. Davis had been in greatly impaired health sometime, and his death was not unexpected.  H
2 CONC e and Mrs. Davis left Mt. Vernon about two yeas ago for California where they were making the
2 CONC ir home when he died.  They had no children. Mr. Davis was for many years one of the leadin
2 CONC g general merchants of Jefferson County, conducting a large store at Waltonville.  He was a s
2 CONC uccessful business man.  Some years ago he located in Mt. Vernon where he engaged in the insu
2 CONC rance business until leaving for California.  Mr. and Mrs. Davis had many friends in Mt. Venr
2 CONC on and in the sourthwest part of the county.  He was born in Monroe County, but lived in Jeff
2 CONC erson County many years and married Miss Ruth Hirons of Waltonville, a daughter of Sidney T
2 CONC . Hirons.  Mrs. Hirons survives.  Mr. Davis was 70 or more years old, it is stated.  The bod
2 CONC y will be brought back for burial, and it is understood Mrs. Davis will leave California Tues
2 CONC day next with the body."

2 CONT In the Mt. Vernon Register News a second obituary was published on Thursday, September 28, 19
2 CONC 33 which informed the community that "the body of H. H. Davis, a former resident, who died i
2 CONC n California, a short time ago, will arrive at 11:30 tomorrow morning and funeral services wi
2 CONC ll be held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 in the Methodist church in Waltonville.  Burial will foll
2 CONC ow in Knob Prairie cemetery."

2 CONT On Thursday, October 12, 1933 a third, more detailed obituary appeared in the Mt. Vernon Regi
2 CONC ster which read as follows: "Hiram Henry Davis son of the late Hiram S. and Rowena (Fairchild
2 CONC ) Davis, was born near Red Bud, Illinois March 16, 1861, and passed away at South Gate, Calif
2 CONC ornia, September 22, 1933, at the age of 72 years, six months and 16 days.  Mr. Davis locate
2 CONC d in Waltonville in 1892 soon after the completion of the W. C. and W. Railroad, having purch
2 CONC ased the first ticket issued from Percy to Waltonville.  On the 16th day of November 1897, h
2 CONC e was united in marriage with Miss Ruth Hirons, daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Sidney T. Hirons.  M
2 CONC r. and Mrs. Davis' devotion to each other has often been the subject of much favorable commen
2 CONC t among their many friends and his death ends more than thirty-five years of perfect companio
2 CONC nship.  In one of the last letters which Mr. Davis wrote to this friends here he paid a beaut
2 CONC iful tribute to his faithful wife who ministered to him so lovingly during his last long illn
2 CONC ess.  Mr. Davis engaged in the mercantile business here over a period of twenty-five years
2 CONC .  He was one of the most successful nd most highly esteemed business men of Southern Illinoi
2 CONC s and his friends and associates vie with one another in paying merited tribute to his many s
2 CONC terling traits of character.  He won the confidence and esteem of all those with whom he deal
2 CONC t by his honest and straightforward manner of conducting his business affairs.  Of a genial
2 CONC , friendly disposition, he was ever too tired or too busy to extend a pleaant greeting or d
2 CONC o a good turn.  He possessed a keen, analytical and deliberate mind, arriving at his conclusi
2 CONC ons after careful considerations.  These splendid qualities of hand caused his friends and bu
2 CONC siness associates to seek his counsel and rely upon his judgement.  Mr. Davis' life was an op
2 CONC en book; his habits were indeed exemplary.  He greatly enjoyed attending church services.  Th
2 CONC e noble life he led indicates how completely the best and highest ethical and religious princ
2 CONC iples motivated his thoughts and actions.  Three weeks ago today Mr. Davis, realizing that hi
2 CONC s condition was grave, expressed his entire readiness and willingness to go.  He reiterated m
2 CONC any times his deep love for his dear wife and spoke feelingly of his affection for his relati
2 CONC ves in the West and the loved ones back in Illinois.  The surviving relatives include his dev
2 CONC oted wife, four sisters; Mrs. Mary Miller, Murphysboro, Illinois; Mrs. Rena Henderson, San Fe
2 CONC rnando, California; Mrs. Flora Nicholson, and Mrs. Eunice Duker.  Red Bud, Illinois, andone b
2 CONC rother, Warren L. Davis, Wichita, Kansas.  His parents, two brothers and two sisters precede
2 CONC d him in death.  It is difficult for us to realize that our good friend, Henry Davis, has joi
2 CONC ned the immortals in 'The Land of the Unsetting Sun.'  As we remarked this morning there is n
2 CONC o limit to the good things we might say about Mr. Davis, but fter all the splendid life he li
2 CONC ved, is his greatest eulogy.  Of him it may be truly said: 'There was a man.'  The funeral wa
2 CONC s held Sunday afternoon at the M.E. Church in Waltonville, conducted by Elder Arold, a Primit
2 CONC ive Baptist minister of Carmi, Illinois.  Six nephews acted as pall bearers.  The foral offer
2 CONC ings were many and very beautiful.  The funeral was one of the largest ever held in Waltonvil
2 CONC le.  The attendance at the church and cemetery was an eloquent tribute to the affection and r
2 CONC espect for which Mr. Davis was held by his many friends.  Interment was at Knob Prairie Cemet
2 CONC ery."

2 CONC nts, died at his home, 216 south Twelfth Street, at 11:30 o'clock last night.  He had been i
2 CONC n impaired health for several years and his condition had been critical since last Saturday
2 CONC , November 30.  His age was 79 years, 1 month and 18 days.  Funeral services will be held a
2 CONC t the Universalist church in Waltonville at two o'clock Friday afternoon with Elder D. E. Bak
2 CONC er officiating.  Interment will be made in Knob Prairie Cemetery.  Born on a farm near Walton
2 CONC ville on October 16, 1836, Mr. Dodds was a son of John and Emeline Keller Dodds, one of the o
2 CONC ld families of Jefferson County.  He engaged in farming for a number of years and later move
2 CONC d to Mt. Vernon engaging in the real estate business.  On February 11, 1880, he was united i
2 CONC n marriage with Olive L. Gilbert at the home of her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Gilb
2 CONC ert of Waltonville.  On the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary, February 11, 1930
2 CONC .  The Register News published an account of Mr. and Mrs. Dodds' wedded life, showing thatth
2 CONC e entire period had been spent in Jefferson County.  During much of the time they made thei
2 CONC r home in Mt. Vernon and at other times resided on their farm.  They lived in Mt. Vernon in 1
2 CONC 887 when the town was swept by the great cyclone and their home was among the many razed in t
2 CONC hat disaster.

2 CONT An unusual feature of the observance was that Mrs. Dodds' parents and grandparents lived to c
2 CONC elebrate their golden wedding anniversaries. Had Mr. Dodds lived to February 11, 1936, he an
2 CONC d Mrs. Dodds would have been married 56 years.  Mr. and Mrs. Dodds werean unusually devoted c
2 CONC ouple and their long married life was characterized by happiness.  Always actively affiliate
2 CONC d with the Democratic party, Mr. Dodds was elected coroner with a large plurality in the land
2 CONC slide of 1932.  He made an active campaign despite his age and his personal popularity was at
2 CONC tested by his success.  He conducted the affairs of his office in a thorough and efficient ma
2 CONC nner, holding inquests in many deaths.  Troubled by his failing health at times, he occasiona
2 CONC lly delegated a part of the work to assistants, but at all tiimes he fulfilled the major duti
2 CONC es of the position.

2 CONT Mr. Dodds was a man of excellent business judgement, honest and upright in his dealings wit
2 CONC h his fellow me,andin a long and busy life left only friends.  He never entertained feeling
2 CONC s of ill will against anyone and his frank, open manner, his sterling traits of character wo
2 CONC n for him the respect of all, and the affection of those who knew him best. He is survived b

2 CONC s.  Funeral services will be held in the First M.E. Church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock co
2 CONC nducted by Dr. Harry C. Brown, and burial will follow in Knob Prairie cemetery, near Waltonvi
2 CONC lle.  The body was taken to the undertaking parlors of O.B. Fly & Sons, 107 North Tenth Stree
2 CONC t and prepared for burial, where it may be viewed by friends at any convenient time up to th
2 CONC e funeral hour tomorrow.  Of an intensely patriotic nature, Mr. Dodds served as a sergeant i
2 CONC n Company K, Illinois volunteer infantry in the Spanish American War in 1898.  He proved a go
2 CONC od soldier, living up to his rule of giving wholehearted service in all the undertakings of l
2 CONC ife.  He was a member of Eben Swift Post, No 94, United Spanish War veterans, and in the day
2 CONC s of his health and strength took much interest in the organization, and the patriotic princi
2 CONC ples for which it stands.  Born on a farm, Mr. Dodds spent his early life in farm pursuits, b
2 CONC ut located in Mt. Vernon 49 years ago.  He and his brother, John David Dodds, operated an ext
2 CONC ensive livery business at Eleventh and Broadway, a number of years, the business at that tim
2 CONC e being one of much importance.  Later he served as a city policeman at different times bein
2 CONC g most favorably known as a conscientious and efficient officer.  Mr. Dodds, aside from his m
2 CONC any excellent personal qualities and virtues, will be best remembered as a magistrate.  For 2
2 CONC 5 or 30 years he served in one or the other of two offices of the same nature, police magistr
2 CONC ate of the city of Mt. Vernon and justice of the peace of Mt. Vernon township.  Mr. Dodds, i
2 CONC n his long service as a magistrate was recognized as a capable judge of the law, a fair and c
2 CONC onscientious administrator of the law as far asit was involved in the office of magistrate
2 CONC .  His courteous treatment, his consideration for unfortunates, brought before him on crimina
2 CONC l charges, and fair dealing with all concerned in civil and all other cases, combined to mak
2 CONC e him a most popular man and official.  His popularity through a long period of public servic
2 CONC e is attested by the fact that even in Republican landslide years, he as a Democrat, receive
2 CONC d the largest vote of any candidate of either party, being the only Democrat elected.  Althou
2 CONC gh a consistent Democrat he won the support of people of all parties by reason of his fair an
2 CONC d honest disposition of the matters coming before him in his official capacity.  Personally
2 CONC , popular, of a kindly, friendly nature, he made and retained friends throughout his long lif
2 CONC e, the friends of his youth being his friends until the end. To his personal friends Mr. Dodd
2 CONC s was universally known as Neal, while to many others, he was always "Uncle Neal."  His quiet
2 CONC , peaceful death was a fitting climax to a life of earnest honest endeavor, of a spirit of li
2 CONC ve and let live, of good will toward others, with tolerance for the weaknesses and fralitie
2 CONC s of the human family and with malice toward none, a life in which the Golden Rule was exempl
2 CONC ified as nearly as it can be in a modern world."

2 CONC 0 months, 17 days.  She was the daughter of John D. and Emiline Keller Dodds, one of the pion
2 CONC eer families of Jefferson county.  She was one of a family of five, her three brothers -- Dav
2 CONC id D., W. Neal, and Wm. S. with a sister, Mrs. Margaret A. Mannen, preceding her.  She was ma
2 CONC rried in Sidney T. Hirons son of Benjamin and Emily Place Hirons on November 18, 1875.  To th
2 CONC em were born four children -- Mrs. Ruth Davis of Mt. Vernon, John D. of Fresno, California, W
2 CONC m. Hughs and Mrs. Ray Mannen of Waltonville, all of whom survive, together with six grandchil

2 CONC d lived all her life in and near Waltonville.  While Mrs. Hirons was not affiliated with th
2 CONC e Primitive Baptist Church, she was a strong believer in the faith and lived its principles
2 CONC .  She was truly a Christian woman.  In her family she was gentle kind and loving in her hom
2 CONC e life she was unassuming true and devoted.  No one ever came into her home that did not fee
2 CONC l the warmth and genuine hospitality of a friendly and sympathetic heart.  In the long afflic
2 CONC tion of her husband she never murmured or grew weary.  In her own long illness she was alway
2 CONC s cheerful and hoping that she would soon grow better.  She was all that a devoted wife an
2 CONC d a loving mother could be.  She leaves for the living, unwritten precepts of a life which wi
2 CONC ll make us grow stronger in that faith which will light the darkest path way along life's jou
2 CONC rney.  She lived such a faith that if we could feel her comforting and sympathetic life jus

1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY:  In a sketch of Thomas H. Mannen we learn the following about his life:  "farmer
2 CONC , P.O. Laur, is a native of Bracken Co., Kentucky, born June 24, 1839, eldest child of Sidne
2 CONC y S. and Eliza (Walton) Mannen, natives of the same State.  The father was a tanner by trade
2 CONC , and was thus engaged in his native State and also in Illinois removing in 1841; he dealt al
2 CONC so largely in stock, and in early days followed the river, dealing horses, etc.; he also farm
2 CONC ed in late years, and he died on election day, 1871.  His wife is still living in this county
2 CONC .  Theparents had nine children, one of whom is deceased, those living are T.H., Josiah H., J
2 CONC ohn J., Leslie C., Robert W., Sidney S., Annie E., and Jerome.  Mr. Mannen obtained but a lim
2 CONC ited education in early years.  He started out as a farmer, but after some time thus engaged

2 CONC : "Joseph H. Norris of Waltonville died at his home yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock, his dea
2 CONC th being very sudden and unexpected.  Mr. Norris had ben somewhat indisposed the last day o
2 CONC r two, but had been up and about transacting his ordinary business affairs.

2 CONT Mr. Norris was a victim of influenza last winter and had never regained his former strength
2 CONC , and to this fact is attributed in part his death, complicated with acute Bright's disease
2 CONC .  Mr. Norris was one of the best known, most popular and highly respected citizens of the so
2 CONC uthwest part of Jefferson County, and his death comes as a great shock to not only his immedi
2 CONC ate family and other relatives but to his hundreds of friends in the locality in which he liv
2 CONC ed, and elsewhere.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He was a very successful farmer, an excellent trader, a man of sound judgment, and a citize
2 CONC n above reproach.  All who knew him were his friends and universal expressions of regret an
2 CONC d tributes to his worth as a man, and a member of society are heard on all sides.  Mr. Norri
2 CONC s was born in Jefferson County and was 47 years old March 4 of this year.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mr. Norris always attended the Universalist church and took great interest in its welfare an
2 CONC d in the cause of religion.  About twenty-four years ago Mr. Norris was united in marriage wi
2 CONC th Miss Myrtie Dodds, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Dodds of this city who with the followin
2 CONC g children, survives: Harry, William, Russell, Mary Olive, Louis, and Sadie.  Mr. Norris is s
2 CONC urvived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Norris, and one sister, Mrs. G. W. Ragland, an
2 CONC d one brother, Stanley Norris.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mr. Norris complained of dizziness Sunday and on Monday and seemed to be very weak.  Monday h
2 CONC e ate a hearty breakfast and expressed himself as feeling unusually well, except for dizzines
2 CONC s.  He left home after breakfast and attended to business matters, returning about 9 o'cloc
2 CONC k and again suffering with attacks of dizziness, sat down in a chair in the shade on his lawn
2 CONC .  Shortly after his condition became much worse.  A physician who had been hastily summone
2 CONC d when he was stricken was unable to save him, and he died about 4 o'clock.

2 CONC t 2 p.m. Thursday after a sudden illness.  He was a retired employee of the Illinois Power Co
2 CONC ., retiring in 1962.  Mr. Reid was born in Mt. Vernon June 26, 1897, the son of Robert and Ma
2 CONC ry Reid.  On December 25, 1920, in Mt. Vernon, he married Anne Dodds, who survives.  A Navy v
2 CONC eteran of World War I, Mr. Reid had been a resident of Centralia for about 50 years.  Mr. Rei

2 CONC on Post No. 446 and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.  Funeral services wi

2 CONC ber of 1916.  He resided at 115 north 12th street.  He had submitted to an operation on Monda
2 CONC y of this week at the Rochester Hospital, friends said today.  The body will be returned to M

2 CONC l in Urbana.  She taught at science at Mt. Vernon Township High School for several years an
2 CONC d when there was a teachers shortage during World War II she returned to teach at Casey Junio
2 CONC r High School.  She was born November 23, 1896 in Welge, in Randolph County, near Chester
2 CONC , a daughter of John L. and Elizabeth (Scheller) Rainey.  In 1923, she married Harry P. Dodds
2 CONC , a Mt. Vernon native, who preceded her in death in 1958.  Graveside services for the buria
2 CONC l of the cremated remains will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Oakwood Cemetery in Mt. Vernon with th
2 CONC e Rev. Alan Rhein officiating.  No visitation will be held.  Those attending the graveside se
2 CONC rvices are asked to go directly to the cemetery.  Hughey Funeral Home is in charge of service
2 CONC s.  Mrs. Dodds attended both grade school and high school in Mt. Vernon, and graduated wit
2 CONC h a bachelor of science degree from Northwestern University.  Since the subject she taught, g
2 CONC eneral science, was required, it meant that virtually everyone who went through the school sy
2 CONC stem in the 40s and 50s had her as a teacher.  She was a member of several clubs, and was th
2 CONC e last surviving charter member of the Mt. Vernon Panhellenic Club.  Mrs. Dodds is survived b
2 CONC y two sons, Thomas P. and wife Romaine of Des Plaines and Donald R. and wife Ellie of Champai
2 CONC gn; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Dodds of Chicago, Jane Guerin of New York City, Dinao Mitchel

2 CONC ge.  Mr. Mannen was born September 6, 1880 at Waltonville, the son of Josiah and May B. (McNa
2 CONC il) Mannen.  On August 11, 1909 he was married to Alma Dodds, who survives. Besides his wife
2 CONC , he is survived by one son, Marvin Mannen of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Anna Ruth Schere

2 CONC d as follows: "Raymond Stanley Mannen, 67, former mayor of Waltonville, died at 4:50 p.m. yes
2 CONC terday at the Misouri Baptist Hospital in St. Louis after a lingering illness.  Mr. Mannen
2 CONC , a well known Jefferson county farmer and stock raiser, was also employed in the land depart
2 CONC ment of the C.W. A. F Coal Co.  He was elected and served four terms as mayor of Waltonville
2 CONC .  Mr. Mannen was born January 12, 1886 near Waltonville, the son of Josiah H. and Mary B. (M
2 CONC cNail) Mannen. He attended Ewing College at Ewing, Illinois.  On October 11, 1911 he was marr
2 CONC ied, in Mt.Vernon, to Margaret Euterpe Hirons.  His death occurred on their 43rd wedding anni
2 CONC versary.  Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the Methodist church in Walt
2 CONC onville and burial will be in Knob Prairie cemetery.  Friends may call at the Fry Funeral Hom
2 CONC e in Waltonville after 6:00 p.m. today.  At 2:00 p.m. Wednesday the body will be moved to th

2 CONC d at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Decatur Memorial Hospital.  Mr. Hirons served as Jefferson County s
2 CONC uperintendent of Schools for 16 years and was the former superintendent of Waltonville Schoo
2 CONC l Unit I.  He was employed in the Office of Public Instruction in Springfield for eight years
2 CONC .  He was born in Jefferson County in 1914, the son of William Hughs and Edith (Shurtz) Hiron
2 CONC s.  On September 23, 1970, at Decatur, he married Hazel (Goessman) Hicks, who survives.  Mr
2 CONC . Hirons graduated from Southern Illinois University with a bachelor's degree and from the Un
2 CONC iversity of Illinois with a master's degree.  Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m.  Fri
2 CONC day at the Fry & Frick Funeral Chapel in Waltonville with the Rev. Carl Williams officiating

2 CONC llis A. Keller relates the following about his parents: "... John Keller, was born in North C
2 CONC arolina July 17, 1804, and moved with his parents of Bedford County, Tennessee, in 1814, wher
2 CONC e he received his education and married.  In December 1841, he moved with his family to Jeffe
2 CONC rson County, Illinois, and settled in Elk Prairie Township.  He was a farmer by occupation, b
2 CONC ut in the winter often worked at shoe-making and coopering.  In 1847, he enlisted in the Unit
2 CONC ed States service of the Mexican War, and died in Jalapa, Mexico, in January 1847, from a dis
2 CONC ease contracted while in the service.  His wife, Mary (Nees) Keller, was a native of Lincol
2 CONC n County, Tennessee, born in 1805, and died in Jefferson County, Illinois, in December 1869
2 CONC .  She was the mother of ten children, of whom Elizabeth, Jane, Willis and Jesse are now livi

2 CONC , Tenn., July 1, 1826.  ... Willis A. Keller was reared on the farm, and received but a limit
2 CONC ed education.  At ten years of age he began working out on a farm by the month, and continue
2 CONC d the same until he was nineteen years of age, when he married and engaged in farming on hi
2 CONC s own account.  He commenced on a capital of less than $10, and rented land; but by good mana
2 CONC gement, economy and integrity he became very successful, and accumulated over 1,000 acres.  I
2 CONC n connection with his farm, he has, for two years, been, engaged in the livery business in Mt
2 CONC . Vernon.  He was married January 7, 1846, to Miss Mary Dodds, a native of Kentucky, born Nov

2 CONC n that "Willis A. Keller ... owing to favorable circumstances his educational training was bu
2 CONC t limited and at the age of ten years he left home to make his own way in the world, by worki
2 CONC ng on a farm at very small wages.  After continuing this kind of labor until his nineteenth y
2 CONC ear he married and set up a domestic establishment of his own on rented land, the lady who be
2 CONC came his wife being Miss Mary Dodds, and the date on which the ceremony took place, the 7th J
2 CONC anuary, 1846.

2 CONT Willis A. Keller began farming for himself under circumstances which to most men would have b
2 CONC een would have been considered decidedly discouraging, but to one of his energy and optimism
2 CONC , the future appeared bright with promise, notwithstanding the sum total of his earthly capit
2 CONC al at that time amounted to less than ten dollars.  With a determination which knew no such w
2 CONC ord as fail, he resolutely addressed himself to his labors, and in due time succeeded in bett
2 CONC ering his condition and laying the foundation of a career which ultimately resulted in one o
2 CONC f the largest private fortunes in his township and earning for him much more than local reput
2 CONC e as a progressive farmer and public-spirited citizen.  Mr. Keller's industry became proverbi
2 CONC al in his neighborhood and his economy, sound judgment and excellent management bore their le
2 CONC gitimate fruits in a competency which not only placed him in independent circumstances but a
2 CONC s stated above made him one of the financially solid and reliable men of the county.  From th

2 CONC e interests which tended to augment his fortune.  Mrs. Mary (Dodds) Keller, who was born in K
2 CONC entucky, November 29, 1829, died in Jefferson county, Illinois, July 1865, leaving these chil
2 CONC dren, namely: Sarah E., wife of George W. Yost; Judge C.A. Keller, of San Antonio, Texas; Ama
2 CONC nda, who married Robert Lloyd, and Minnie, now Mrs. Julian Frochock, and Carrie Fly, wife o

1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY:  In the History of Jefferson County, Illinois by John Wall we read the following
2 CONC : "Charles R. Keller, to a brief review of whose career the reader's attention is herewith re
2 CONC spectfully invited , was born in Mount Vernon on the 18th day of April, 1872, and spent his e
2 CONC arly life in the city and on his father's farm, his experience in the country having a decide
2 CONC d influence in fostering habits of industry and teaching lessons of self-reliance which subse
2 CONC quently resulted so greatly to his advantage.  At the proper age he entered the public school
2 CONC s of his native place, between which and the country districts he devoted the time until comp
2 CONC leting the prescribed course when he became a student in the Southern Illinois Normal Schoo
2 CONC l at Carbondale, where he prosecuted his studies for a period of two years, during which tim
2 CONC e he made commendable progress and earned a creditable record.  On leaving the above institut
2 CONC ion Mr. Keller yielded to a predilection in favor of a business life, accepting a clerkship w
2 CONC ith the mercantile firm of culli Brothers & McAtee, of Mount Vernon, in whose employ he conti
2 CONC nued from 1890 until 1896, when he resigned his position to enter upon his duties as Clerk o
2 CONC f the Circuit Court, to which office he was elected in the fall of the latter year.  From hi
2 CONC s youth he had manifested a lively interest in public affairs and on attaining his majority b
2 CONC ecame influential in political circles and one of the rising young Democrats of Jefferson cou
2 CONC nty, and when it became necessary to select a candidate for the important and responsible off
2 CONC ice of Circuit Clerk, attention was directed to him as the most available man to select, an
2 CONC d it was not long until his party friends rallied to his support and his nomination, his elec
2 CONC tion following as a matter of course, not altogether, however, on account of the normally lar
2 CONC ge Democratic majority but by reason of his great personal popularity and eminent fitness fo
2 CONC r the position as well.

2 CONT Mr. Keller's official career proving creditable to himself and acceptable to the public he wa
2 CONC s renominated at the expiration of his term and in the election of 1900 was again victorious
2 CONC , defeating his competitor by a decisive majority and during his second incumbency proving a
2 CONC n able and faithful public servant whose record fully met the expectations of the people.  O
2 CONC n retiring from the clerkship Mr. Keller devoted two years to the grocery business but at th
2 CONC e expiration of that time severed his connection with merchandising and in 1906 entered the H
2 CONC am National Bank as assistant cashier, which position he still worhily holds.  In his presen
2 CONC t capacity as in his official relations with the public he discharges his duties in the faith
2 CONC ful and conscientious manner characteristic of the man, demonstrating clerical abilities o
2 CONC f a high order and a familiarity with finance and matters relating thereto which render his s
2 CONC ervices especially valuable to the management of the institution with which he is identified.

2 CONT Mr. Keller is a gentleman of high character and strict integrity whose worth has been duly ap
2 CONC preciated and rewarded and whose name has ever been above the suspicion of dishonor.  The uni
2 CONC versal esteem in which he is held by the people of his city and county bears eloquent testimo
2 CONC ny to his many sterling qualities while the honors conferred upon him by his fellow citizen
2 CONC s and the confidence reposed in him by his present employers show him to be loyal to every tr
2 CONC ust and worthy of the support and confidence with which he is regarded.  Despite the fact o
2 CONC f his never having assumed the duties and responsibilities of the marriage relation Mr. Kelle
2 CONC r is an influential factor in the social life of Mount Vernon and takes an active interest i
2 CONC n all movements having for their object the amelioration of the human ills, and the general p
2 CONC rosperity and welfare of the body politic.  Fraternally he is identified with the Knights o
2 CONC f Pythias, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows
2 CONC , and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, in all of which organizations he takes a leading part be
2 CONC sides being honored with important positions from time to time."

1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY:  A sketch is found in the History of Jefferson County, Illinois by Perrin which re
2 CONC ads as follows: "Judge Columbus A. Keller, lawyer, Mt. Vernon, is a native of this county, ha
2 CONC ving been born about three miles southwest of Mt. Vernon, November 24, 1851. He was raised o
2 CONC n he home farm, and during his youth gave his attention to farming pursuits.  In the common s
2 CONC chools of the vicinity he obtained his early schooling, which he supplementedby a three years
2 CONC ' course of study, under the preceptorship of Prof. T. H. Herdman, then of Mt. Vernon, no
2 CONC w a Methodist clergyman residing near Vandalia, Ill.  Becoming dissatisfied with life on th
2 CONC e farm, he evinced an early desire to cast his lot with some of the higher profession.  Tha
2 CONC t of law appeared to possess greater attractions for him than any other, and he resolved to g
2 CONC ive both time and money to the prosecution of studies in this direction, and accordingly, i
2 CONC n 1869, he entered the McKendree College, Lebanon, Ill., where he subsequently passed the req
2 CONC uired examination, and graduated with honor in 1871.  He returned home and continued his stud
2 CONC ies under Judge James M.Pollock, and in the fall of 1872 entered the Ann Arbor Law University
2 CONC , where he acquired such a proficiency in his studies, that he was enabled to creditably pas
2 CONC s a rigid examinationin open Supreme Court at Ottawa, Ill.  Judge Pollock took him in as a pa
2 CONC rtner, the partnership lasting until 1877, when our subject was elected County Judge of Jeffe
2 CONC rson County for four years, during which time he discharged the duties thereof to the credi
2 CONC t of himself, and to the satisfaction of the people at large.  Upon his retirement from offic
2 CONC e, he resumed the practice of his profession, and is at present thus engaged.  September 16
2 CONC , 1873, he married, in Lebanon, Ill., Miss Nellie F. Raymond, a native of California, and a d
2 CONC aughter of Charles R. and Jennie L. Raymond.  This union has been blessed with three children
2 CONC , viz., May, Raymond and Willis.  In politics, the Judge takes an active interest, being iden
2 CONC tified with the Democrat party.  He is Grand Master of the Grand Lodge, I.O.O.F., and is als
2 CONC o a member of the A.O.U.W., K. of H., and R. T. of T.  It is seldom that we find one who ha
2 CONC s ascended the ladder of fame with more rapid strides than has Judge Keller.  Rising from th
2 CONC e lowly position of a farm boy to that of Judge of a wealthy and populous county, and that, t
2 CONC oo, at an age which made him by far the youngest in the State of Illinois, entitles him to th
2 CONC at honor and praise which is due to those whose pathway is strewn, not with flowers as some m
2 CONC ight suppose, but at whose every step are met obstacles adn adversities which determination a
