2 CONC obert K. "Bob" Thompson, 65, 1500 Pace Avenue, died at 3:02 a.m. June 16, 1986, in Good Samar
2 CONC itan Hospital.  Mr. Thompson was born November 5, 1920, in Mt. Vernon, a son of Charles J. an
2 CONC d Ruth D. (Dodds) Thompson.  On October 18, 1941, at St. Charles, Missouri, he married Maria
2 CONC n L. Manley, who survives.  The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hughey Funeral Home wit
2 CONC h the Very Rev. Robert D. Harmon officiating.  Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.  Frien
2 CONC ds may call at Hughey Funeral Home after 6 p.m. today.  Mr. Thompson was associated with, an
2 CONC d held several positions with The Register News for 39 years, serving last as general manager
2 CONC .  Following that he worked for Century 21 Bee Realtors as a real estate salesman.  In additi
2 CONC on to his wife, Mr. Thompson is survived by one son, Charles R. Thompson of Chicago; two daug
2 CONC hters, Mrs. John S. (Charlotte) Suhler of Darien, Connecticut, and Mrs. Chris G. (Debi) Dixo
2 CONC n of Breese; one brother, William D. Thompson of Warrensburg, Mo.; five grandchildren, Ashley

2 CONC . Thompson was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church.  He was also a member of the Mt. Ver

2 CONC .  "It was 'Thirty' last night for a newspaperman who spent a lifetime in the composing roo
2 CONC m and front office when Charles J. Thompson died suddenly.  Mr.Thompson, business manager o
2 CONC f the Register-News, would have been 70 years old December 5.  Although in failing health fo
2 CONC r 10 years, he worked on the last day of his life at the job he loved -- getting out the dail
2 CONC y newspaper.  Death occurred at 10:30 p.m. at his home, 115 N. 13th Street.  Mr. Thompson beg
2 CONC an his newspaper career as a small boy carrying a paper route for the Mt. Vernon News.  He wa
2 CONC s still a boy when he went into the composing room as a 'printer's devil' and became a journe
2 CONC yman printer as a youth.  He was business manager of The News at the time it was consolidate
2 CONC d with The Register to form The Register News in 1920, and has been with the newspaper ever s
2 CONC ince.  He served in the Army during World War I and had been active in veterans affairs since
2 CONC .  He was a past commander of the local American Legion Post, and served a number of terms o
2 CONC n the post executive committee.  A long-time member of the Elks, he was a past Exalted Rule
2 CONC r of the Mt. Vernon Lodge.  His other civic service included membership on the grade school b
2 CONC oard and as a draft board adviser.  Mr. Thompson was a member of First Community Church and t
2 CONC he local Masonic order.  He was born December 5, 1889, in Dubois, Illinois, the son of Ezekie
2 CONC l and Anna (Hoover) Thompson.  His father was a veteran of the Civil War.  He was married i
2 CONC n 1918 to Ruth Dodds, who survives.  They have two sons, Robert K. of The Register-News adver
2 CONC tising staff and William D., a member of the Mt. Vernon junior college faculty, and five gran
2 CONC dchildren.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Myers Chapel.  The Rev. Andr
2 CONC ew Caraker will officiate and burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.  The body will lie in stat
2 CONC e at the chapel where friends may call after 4 p.m. today."

2 CONC 5 which read: "John David Dodds, coroner of Jefferson county and one of its best known reside
2 CONC nts, died at his home, 216 south Twelfth Street, at 11:30 o'clock last night.  He had been i
2 CONC n impaired health for several years and his condition had been critical since last Saturday
2 CONC , November 30.  His age was 79 years, 1 month and 18 days.  Funeral services will be held a
2 CONC t the Universalist church in Waltonville at two o'clock Friday afternoon with Elder D. E. Bak
2 CONC er officiating.  Interment will be made in Knob Prairie Cemetery.  Born on a farm near Walton
2 CONC ville on October 16, 1836, Mr. Dodds was a son of John and Emeline Keller Dodds, one of the o
2 CONC ld families of Jefferson County.  He engaged in farming for a number of years and later move
2 CONC d to Mt. Vernon engaging in the real estate business.  On February 11, 1880, he was united i
2 CONC n marriage with Olive L. Gilbert at the home of her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Gilb
2 CONC ert of Waltonville.  On the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary, February 11, 1930
2 CONC .  The Register News published an account of Mr. and Mrs. Dodds' wedded life, showing thatth
2 CONC e entire period had been spent in Jefferson County.  During much of the time they made thei
2 CONC r home in Mt. Vernon and at other times resided on their farm.  They lived in Mt. Vernon in 1
2 CONC 887 when the town was swept by the great cyclone and their home was among the many razed in t
2 CONC hat disaster.
2 CONT 
2 CONT An unusual feature of the observance was that Mrs. Dodds' parents and grandparents lived to c
2 CONC elebrate their golden wedding anniversaries. Had Mr. Dodds lived to February 11, 1936, he an
2 CONC d Mrs. Dodds would have been married 56 years.  Mr. and Mrs. Dodds werean unusually devoted c
2 CONC ouple and their long married life was characterized by happiness.  Always actively affiliate
2 CONC d with the Democratic party, Mr. Dodds was elected coroner with a large plurality in the land
2 CONC slide of 1932.  He made an active campaign despite his age and his personal popularity was at
2 CONC tested by his success.  He conducted the affairs of his office in a thorough and efficient ma
2 CONC nner, holding inquests in many deaths.  Troubled by his failing health at times, he occasiona
2 CONC lly delegated a part of the work to assistants, but at all tiimes he fulfilled the major duti
2 CONC es of the position.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mr. Dodds was a man of excellent business judgement, honest and upright in his dealings wit
2 CONC h his fellow me,andin a long and busy life left only friends.  He never entertained feeling
2 CONC s of ill will against anyone and his frank, open manner, his sterling traits of character wo
2 CONC n for him the respect of all, and the affection of those who knew him best. He is survived b
2 CONC y his wife, five daughters, one son, a sister and a brother.  The daughters are Mrs. Myrtle E
2 CONC . Norris of Waltonville, Mrs. Charles J. Thompson of Mt. Vernon, Mrs. Ruby Hirons of St. Loui

2 CONC : "Joseph H. Norris of Waltonville died at his home yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock, his dea
2 CONC th being very sudden and unexpected.  Mr. Norris had ben somewhat indisposed the last day o
2 CONC r two, but had been up and about transacting his ordinary business affairs.

2 CONT Mr. Norris was a victim of influenza last winter and had never regained his former strength
2 CONC , and to this fact is attributed in part his death, complicated with acute Bright's disease
2 CONC .  Mr. Norris was one of the best known, most popular and highly respected citizens of the so
2 CONC uthwest part of Jefferson County, and his death comes as a great shock to not only his immedi
2 CONC ate family and other relatives but to his hundreds of friends in the locality in which he liv
2 CONC ed, and elsewhere.
2 CONT 
2 CONT He was a very successful farmer, an excellent trader, a man of sound judgment, and a citize
2 CONC n above reproach.  All who knew him were his friends and universal expressions of regret an
2 CONC d tributes to his worth as a man, and a member of society are heard on all sides.  Mr. Norri
2 CONC s was born in Jefferson County and was 47 years old March 4 of this year.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mr. Norris always attended the Universalist church and took great interest in its welfare an
2 CONC d in the cause of religion.  About twenty-four years ago Mr. Norris was united in marriage wi
2 CONC th Miss Myrtie Dodds, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Dodds of this city who with the followin
2 CONC g children, survives: Harry, William, Russell, Mary Olive, Louis, and Sadie.  Mr. Norris is s
2 CONC urvived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Norris, and one sister, Mrs. G. W. Ragland, an
2 CONC d one brother, Stanley Norris.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mr. Norris complained of dizziness Sunday and on Monday and seemed to be very weak.  Monday h
2 CONC e ate a hearty breakfast and expressed himself as feeling unusually well, except for dizzines
2 CONC s.  He left home after breakfast and attended to business matters, returning about 9 o'cloc
2 CONC k and again suffering with attacks of dizziness, sat down in a chair in the shade on his lawn
2 CONC .  Shortly after his condition became much worse.  A physician who had been hastily summone
2 CONC d when he was stricken was unable to save him, and he died about 4 o'clock.

2 CONT Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock at the Universalist church in W

2 CONC m. yesterday at Good Samaritan Hospital, at the age of 91. Mr. Mannen, a retired farmer who r
2 CONC esided at 2701 Casey Avenue, had been in failing health for a long time.  Funeral services wi
2 CONC ll be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Myers Chapel.  The Reverend Ernest Dycus will officiate an
2 CONC d burial will be in Memorial Gardens.  The body will lie in state at Myers Chapel, where frie
2 CONC nds may call between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Sunday.  For many years Mr. Mannen owned and ope
2 CONC rated a large farm in the Waltonville area.  He served four years as coroner of Jefferson Cou
2 CONC nty and for several years, was an automobile salesman in Mt. Vernon.  He attended Ewing Colle
2 CONC ge.  Mr. Mannen was born September 6, 1880 at Waltonville, the son of Josiah and May B. (McNa
2 CONC il) Mannen.  On August 11, 1909 he was married to Alma Dodds, who survives. Besides his wife
2 CONC , he is survived by one son, Marvin Mannen of Houston, Texas; one daughter, Anna Ruth Schere
2 CONC r of Mt. Vernon; a brother, Sebern Mannen of Mt. Vernon; six grandchildren and seven great-gr

1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY: The following sketch was found in the History of Jefferson County, Illinois for Me
2 CONC nzis R. Gilbert.  It reads: " ... farmer, P. O. Laur, was born February 23, 1831, in Washingt
2 CONC on County, Ohio, a son of Eli Gilbert.  Subject came with his parents to Jefferson County i
2 CONC n 1839, and here continued his attendance at school, although his eyes, which had been seriou
2 CONC sly affected from his birth, prevented him from doing much studying.  He was brought up o
2 CONC n a farm, and has during his life, given his attention to no other employment.  His present f
2 CONC arm of 400 acres is under a good state of cultivation, and he engages in mixed farming.  He w
2 CONC as married, January 19, 1858, to Elizabeth Ford, born January 22, 1841, a daughter of Solomo
2 CONC n Ford, of this county.  Five children have blessed this union, of whom three survive -- .. .
2 CONC Mr. Gilbert has a good residence, which he built in 1859, and made some substantial addition
2 CONC s in 1875.  Having a farm especially adapted to the raising of stock, he intends to devote so

1 NOTE BIOGRAPHY:  In a sketch about Eli Gilbert we learn his ancestral family  originated in Englan
2 CONC d and came to settle in Massachusetts from 1632 to 1644.  Descendants spread out onto America
2 CONC n soil to various states which included New Hampshire and Vermont.  This is where Eli was bor
2 CONC n in 1789 and grew up thereafter, eventually marrying Susanna who was from Vermont.

2 CONT "In 1816, Eli Sr. with his family and friends decided to move to the Ohio country which had b
2 CONC een opened to setlement as a result of the Northwest Ordinance.  They moved by covered wagon
2 CONC s across Pennsylvania and New York, working along the way to defray expenses.  They arrived a
2 CONC t Olean Point two years later.  
2 CONT 
2 CONT The families lived in tents while building flat boats.  Loading their families and possession
2 CONC s on the flat boats they floated down the Allegheny River to the Ohio, arriving in Marietta i
2 CONC n 1818.  They lived there 21 years.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Eli Sr. was an expert cloth dresser by trade, a farmer, and also ran a water mill for grindin
2 CONC g grain and a sawmill.
2 CONT 
2 CONT In 1838 Eli Sr. explored the length of Illinois and decided to move his family to Jefferson C
2 CONC ounty.  He chose a spot just north of where the Cyrus Gilbert Cemetery is now located.  Retur
2 CONC ning to Ohio in the fall, he sawed lumber for a two-story frame dwelling, a store, mill and s
2 CONC everal flat boats before dismantling the mill.  The flatboats were loaded with families and p
2 CONC ossessions including livestock, the mill, lumber, tools, grind stones and glass window pane
2 CONC s for their new home.
2 CONT 
2 CONT After encountering many hardships, they reached Shawneetown and eventually settled at Knob Pr
2 CONC airie in 1839.  Eli Sr. built the first two-story home with glass window panes. He also set o
2 CONC ut the first apple orchard in Jefferson County.  Eli Sr. and Susannah organized the first Uni
2 CONC versalist Church in Jefferson County.  The church was moved to Waltonville in 1895."

2 CONT Considering the average lifespan for that time period, it was a pretty ambitious undertakin
2 CONC g to take your family to the west, to lands uncivilized when one was close to 50 years of age
2 CONC .  It is obvious that the blood of exploration flowed through this man's body, and that he li
2 CONC ved a long satisfying life afterwards having died in 1875 at the age of 87.  He was buried ne
2 CONC xt to his wife Susannah who had died in 1865, in the Cyrus Gilbert Cemetery.

2 CONC mmunity.  He has seen it in its primitive condition, when the land was wild and when wolves h
2 CONC owled around the cabin door.  He has born his part in the work of transformation and developm
2 CONC ent, and therefore well deserves representation in this volume.

2 CONT Mr. Gilbert was born in Chittenden County, Vermont, March 4, 1810, and is a son of Eli and Su
2 CONC san (Gale) Gilbert. When he was four years of age his parents removed to New York, locating f
2 CONC irst in Seneca, and afterward in Geneva, where the father worked at his trade of a clothier f
2 CONC or about wo years.  He then took his family to Ohio, and spent the succeeding ten years of hi
2 CONC s life in Washington County.  There he bought some school land, and Ira Gilbert also entere
2 CONC d a tract of eighty acres.  In 1839 the family removed to Jefferson county, Ill., where lan
2 CONC d was purchased and entered, and there the father spent his remaining  days.  ..."

2 CONT Our subject accompanied his parents on their various removals, and aided his father in the li
2 CONC ne of work in which he was engaged.  At the age of eighteen years he entered eighty-acre trac
2 CONC t above mentioned, this being during the administration of Andrew Jackson. He was then workin
2 CONC g for O. R. Loring, of Belpre, Ohio, receiving a salary of $10 per month.  In November, 1830
2 CONC , he married Salome Dils, a native of Parkersburg, West Virginia, and a daughter of John Dils
2 CONC , who was a saddler by trade.  In 1838 Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert came to Illinois and took up thei
2 CONC r residence in Monroe County, where he entered from the Government one hundred and twenty acr
2 CONC es of wild land, upon which he yet resides, although the improved farm of to-day bears littl
2 CONC e resemblance to the uncultivated tract of that time. Altogether he has entered about two hun
2 CONC dred and ninety acres.  He has led a busy and useful life, and success has crowned his effort
2 CONC s.  At one time he owned three hundred and sixty-five acres of valuable land, but recently so
2 CONC ld one hundred and ten acres.

2 CONT In 1889 Mr. Gilbert was called upon to mourn the loss of his wife, who died on the 13th of Ju
2 CONC ne.  She was a most estimable lady, and was held in high regard by all.  They were the parent
2 CONC s of five children, four of whom are yet living:  Lavina, wife of Andrew Netzel, of Nebraska
2 CONC ; Mary, wife of Eli Roy, of Mt. Vernon, Ill; Diantha, wife of Sylvester Haynes, a resident o
2 CONC f California; and Affa, wife of William Dinan.  They reside with her father.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Mr. Gilbert has followed farming and stockraising, and is also engaged in the manufacture o
2 CONC f cheese.  The success of his life has been achieved through his own efforts, and his labor
2 CONC s in former years now enable him to be surrounded by comforts and luxuries.  He belongs to th
2 CONC e Universalist Church, as did his wife.  In politics he is a stalwart Republican.  His caree
2 CONC r has been an upright, honorable one, and he has the confidence and good will of all with who
2 CONC m business or social relations have brought him in contact.  His example is indeed worthy o

1 NOTE OBITUARY:  In a History of Raymond, Illinois the following was written for Eli Gilbert: "die
2 CONC d August 1, 1911 at the age of 73.  He was born March 24, 1838 in Washington County, Ohio
2 CONC , a son of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Gilbert.  When a small boy his parents settled near Mt. Vernon, I
2 CONC ll.  He married Abagail McClauthlin August 27, 1857.  They were the parents of eight children
2 CONC , four sons and four daughters - two died in infancy.  Gilbert enlisted in the 49th Illinoi
2 CONC s Infantry (other sources say Co. H 143rd Illinois Infantry).  About 1881 he settled in Sanga
2 CONC mon county and in 1903 he moved to Raymond.  He was a Universalist.  Children surviving him w
2 CONC ere James W., Raymond; Daniel S., Pawnee; Mrs. Laura Deane, Pawnee; Mrs. Sarah Halford, Uppe
2 CONC r Alton; Mrs. Rowena J. Woolsey, Glenarm; and W. S. of Pawnee.  He is buried in the Asbury Ce

2 CONC e Illinois Volunteer Infantry.  During the war, his wife, her sister and children lived toget
2 CONC her and carried on the family farming opeations.  The family was living in the original hous
2 CONC e built by Eli Sr. when it burned.  They had just finished a new house in Waltonville known a
2 CONC s the Molly Patterson place shortly before his death November 25, 1895..."

2 CONT A second sketch of Samuel Brice Gilbert is found in the History of Jefferson County, IL by Pe
2 CONC rrin and it reads as follows:  "farmer, P.O. Woodlawn, was orn in this county, February 25, 1
2 CONC 841 (not the different date from previous biographical sketch), and was a son of Eli and Luc
2 CONC y (Fairchild) Gilbert. ...  Our subject has made this county his residence all his life.  Hi
2 CONC s education was of the common school character, and since then he has been engaged in farming
2 CONC , now having a farm of 100 acres.  He also deals in stock.  In the spring of 1865, he entere
2 CONC d the service, enlisting in the Forty-ninth Regular Infantry, Col. Moore, Company G.  Our sub
2 CONC ject was stationed at Paducah, Ky., where he remained until the close of the war.  Mr. Gilber
2 CONC t was married in 1862, to Mary A. Rightnowar, a native of this county, and a daughter of Henr
2 CONC y Rightnowar, one of the leading farmers of this county. The result of this marriage has bee
2 CONC n ten children, nine of whom are now living ... Samuel B. is the one deceased.  Our subject i

2 CONC . was born August 8, 1884, the son of Charles Rufus and Loretta Parthena Wells Gilbert. His g
2 CONC randparents were Frank and Patience Place Gilbert (he has been identified with other parents
2 CONC : ).  Roy had a brother, Rolla.  He was six when his dad died.  Rolla married Bertha Shurtz
2 CONC .  Later Roy married Jennie Belle Olomon.  She was born July 25, 1888, daughter of John Henr
2 CONC y and Lucy Adams Oloman.  They lived with his mother on the Gilbert farm 1 1/2 miles N.E. o
2 CONC f Waltonville.  They had six children. ... The Gilberts farmed ground near and far using hors
2 CONC es and weathered many storms under the wagon.  They raised vegetables, butchered their own me
2 CONC at, made applebutter, jelly, and dried apples.  They milked cows, had chickens and geese.  Th
2 CONC e geese were plucked to fill featherbeds.  They picked blackberries and dewberries.  Rainy da
2 CONC ys were spent in the corn crib shelling seed corn for the next planting time.  Threshing tim
2 CONC e the neighbors came with teams and wagons.  Their wives came to help cook and serve dinner
2 CONC .  In dry weather they used a mudboat filled with barrels to haul water from the creek for st
2 CONC ock and laundry.  They heated with wood.  They had kersene lamps that were carried from roo
2 CONC m to room.  The family used a two-seated carriage for transportation to church, visiting, an
2 CONC d to the store.  On Saturday night all the farmers went to Fry's store to exchange eggs and c
2 CONC ream for things they needed.  It was the only time the farmers and their wives got to visit
2 CONC .  The family finally got a Model T car and Roy even got a tractor but he developed a brain t
2 CONC umor and never got to use it.  He had surgery.  On June 12, 1945, he died.  Jennie followed h

2 CONC , and a brother Raleigh, of Waltonville.  Funeral services will be held at the Methodist chur
2 CONC ch in Waltonville at 2 p.m. Friday.  Burial will be at Knob Prairie cemetery.  The body was t

1 NOTE OBITUARY:  In the book entitled The Gilbert Family: Descendants of Thomas Gilbert (1582-1659
2 CONC ) it is quoted as follows: "Augusta Emily Hirons Gilbert, oldest daughter of Sidney and Rhod
2 CONC a Place was born August 2, 1828, in the state of Ohio, and departed this life July 6th, 191
2 CONC 6 at the ripe old age of 87 years, 11 months, and 4 days.  She was united in marriage with Be
2 CONC njamin Level Hirons March 23, 1848.  To this union three sons were born, John C. who died Jan
2 CONC uary 30, 1883, aged almost 35 years, Sidney T. who died June 13, 1910 aged 60 years, and Luth
2 CONC er B. who died December 31, 1903 aged 54 years.  All her children grew to manhood and becam
2 CONC e useful men in this community but all preceeded the mother to the spirit land.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Immediately after her marriage she and her husband began housekeeping in a log cabin on the h
2 CONC ihll where she lived continuously up to the time of her death.  A few years after her marriag
2 CONC e her husband became a cripple, unable to look after his farming and livestock interests as h
2 CONC e had done and those duties developed upon the wife and little boys.  In this work she was ve
2 CONC ry successful and by and through the experience thus obtained made her life a notable one fo
2 CONC r the resolute manner and business-like way in which she conducted her affairs.  She was an u
2 CONC ntiring worker, devoted to her family and her church, ever mindful of the poor and unfortunat
2 CONC e ones in the community around her.

2 CONT She was especially noted for her many charitable deeds, living as she did during the Civil Wa
2 CONC r, a time that tried men's souls and brought forth the loyalty and devotion of the wives an
2 CONC d mothers, sisters and sweethearts.  This opportunity was made use of by grandma to aid and a
2 CONC ssist in every way possible those gallant boys who wore the blue and who were giving their li
2 CONC ves, their all for the salvation of their country.  She was one of the first as well as one o
2 CONC f the most liberal in responding to the needs of the soldiers with clothing and all things ne
2 CONC cessary o their welfare, whether in the hospital, sick, wounded, on the march, or in the tent
2 CONC .  An incident is related of her riding from Knob Prairie on horseback in the month of Decemb
2 CONC er, probably the year of 1863, to the home of Aunt Hannah Ketchum in Ashley, about fourteen m
2 CONC iles, where she and Aunt Hannah worked all night baking bread and cookies which were sent t
2 CONC o the soldiers the next morning.  Many times she rode miles and miles over this country gathe
2 CONC ring up linen which was torn into strips, scraped, sewed and rolled in form for bandages to b
2 CONC e used to bind up the wounds of the soldier boys and also yarn which was knit into socks by h
2 CONC erself and other patriotic and loyal women of the community."

2 CONT At this point we would like to add an additional story recorded by the editor of the paper wh
2 CONC ich continues the charactization of Emily during the war between the states and is supposed t
2 CONC o be recorded in the Dufur book on famlies of Jefferson County, IL.  "It seems that during th
2 CONC e time of the Civil War sympathies were divided in Jefferson County and feelings ran high. Th
2 CONC ere were some Southern sympathizers who would not allow the Union Flag to be flown over the c
2 CONC ourt house in Mt. Vernon.  As you can guess, after reading her obituary this did not set wel
